Saturday 9th of February 2019 – Saturday Roll Up Results
Cold and windy playing conditions did not prevent 29 players to participate in last week’s Saturday Roll Up. There was a tie on top of leader board with Tadeus Herrold and Dana Smith both scoring level par 36 points. In order to determine winter, it required us to look at their back nine scores. After countback Tad took first place with better back nine score 18pts with Dana’s inward score of 15pts, enough for the 2nd place. Ian Grant took third place with one over par 35 points. Last Saturday two players had 2s on their card, Andrew Hulston birdied the 5th hole, with Jeanhyuk Yim making a birdie at the 10th hole to put a 2 on his scorecard.
Winter Eclectic Series
Great to see over 50 members competing in the Winter Eclectic series over 10 rounds. A couple of updates from the events team…to keep our results as accurate as possible.
  • Can I submit my Saturday Roll Up Score for the Eclectic as well? YES, the eclectic is designed to be flexible and played from the same tee’s as the Roll Up – White for gents. *Keep in mind for the published scores that the Roll Up is based on FULL hcp and the Eclectic is based on 75% of your current handicap.
  • How will the events team know I will play in both competitions? As players approach their 8th and 9th card you may opt in or out for your score to count for both. To make it a little easier for all, we have added a column for the Saturday Roll Up Entry sheet – simply Tick next to your name if you wish for the card to count for the Eclectic as well the Roll Up (This has to be done before you tee off).
  • 75% of your CURRENT playing handicap (at the date of the round) is used to calculate your Nett Eclectic score for that day.
We still have till the end of March so players can enter again for another series of 10 games if they wish.
Good Luck to All!
On Course with Martin McGavock – Dreamland Golf Club Superintendent
You will have noticed that the lake levels are low at the moment, particularly on holes 2-5. We have lowered the levels here to allow us to remove huge amounts of sand and silt that have accumulated on the lake liner due to the strong winds over the years dating back to the time of course construction. It’s vital that we remove the sand build up as it acts as the perfect bed for aquatic weeds to take root and spread rapidly. As well as a poor visual impact, this kind of plant growth can also affect our irrigation pumping system during peak summer operations.
Another area of work you may have seen are the trenches which have been dug from the lake between holes 16 and 6 through the bunker then across the rough and path up to the villas. We are laying the last remaining cable required on course to power the lake aerators that will operate there. The aerators will look great once up and running and will help us to reduce any unwanted algae by oxygenating the lake water each day.
Completed recently was the re-turfing of the practice / 1st tee at the Academy Par 3 course. This tee gets a lot of play and constantly requires divoting and repair. In recent seasons the levels have started to become uneven. The grass layer has been removed, re-leveled then re-turfed with fresh undamaged grass from the driving range.
ACADEMY NEWS
New Rules - Bunker Changes
Two new changes to be aware of when playing from Dreamlands many bunkers are:
1) Touching or moving loose impediments or sand
2) The unplayable ball rule
So firstly a golfer is now not penalised if they generally touch the sand with either their club or hand when moving a loose impediment. However, you still cannot deliberately touch the sand to test the condition of the bunker.
With regards the unplayable ball, there is now the option of taking a drop and playing outside the bunker - but with a penalty of two shots. See the diagram. This could be a great option for those that struggle with the steep faces we can sometimes be faced with.
Dream Skills
February at the Academy sees the return of the Dream Skills series. Details in the below flyer:
This months ‘Dream Swing’ Challenge is ZERO HERO – Achieving ‘0’ in terms of clubhead path and clubface aim at impact (coupled with a centre strike from the face) results in straight golf shots. Using the big stick (Driver) make 10 full golf swings attempting to get as close to ‘0’ (neutral) as possible.
