Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church
Worship Focus for February 17
Rev. Steve Whitney, preaching
Greetings!

How’s your week going? If it’s going well, that’s great! I’ll meet you after the next paragraph.

This is for the people whose week (or year or decade or life) isn’t going so well. There’s some good news for you in Luke 6. Jesus speaks to a large crowd of people from all over (including some Gentiles) to hear Jesus teach and to receive healing. (Spoiler alter: They were healed!) And Jesus up-ended the popular notion that wealth and status were a sign of God’s blessing, promising blessing and restoration to people who are poor, hungry, sad, and rejected.

When things are lining up well for us, Jesus warns us against hoarding wealth and seeking approval of those in power. That leads to a false sense of security – the real way to peace is to be part of Jesus’ work in the world!

We’ll dig in deeper on Sunday. I hope you will come and join the conversation.

Peace,
Steve
Theme for Sunday

“Suffering, failure, loneliness, sorrow, discouragement, and death will be part of your journey, but the Kingdom of God will conquer all these horrors. No evil can resist grace forever.”
-Brennan Manning, The Ragamuffin Gospel
Questions for Reflection
  • Where in your life would you like to be healed? This could be physical, emotional or spiritual. Try lifting your prayers to God--or if you would like our prayer team to also be praying for you, email your request to jean@svpc.us. If you would like someone to pray with you, please consider coming to one of our prayer stations after any of our worship services on February 24.
  • Are there places in your life where you feel poor, hungry, weepy or rejected? Try lifting those to God in prayer--what could they look like transformed by God’s love and grace?
  • Are there places in your life where you can rely on your own skill, resources, connections or reputation? Try inviting God into those places in prayer. Is God leading you to make any changes or to use those resources to benefit others?
Luke 6:17-26

Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and...
