Eat Your Heart Out: A Beginner’s Guide to the Heart-Healthy Diet
|
February marks American Heart Month, which is more than fitting given the abundance of heart-shaped paraphernalia lining store shelves this time of year.
In honor of this month-long celebration, AHN’s Registered Dietitian is here to share simple steps that you can take today to keep your ticker in tip-top shape for years to come.
The Heart of the Matter
Heart disease – also referred to as cardiovascular disease – is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. An estimated 92 million Americans (roughly 29% of the population) currently live with some form of heart disease, while nearly one in two Americans are at risk.
Despite its widespread prevalence, heart disease is considered largely preventable through diet and lifestyle choices. Taking small steps to adopt healthier lifestyle habits now can help prevent or delay the onset or progression of heart disease in the future.

VA Planning To Shift Billions of Dollars of Care To Private Providers
|
The Department of Veterans Affairs is preparing to shift billions of dollars from government-run veterans' hospitals to private health care providers, setting the stage for the biggest transformation of the veterans' medical system in a generation. According to a New York Times report, under proposed guidelines, it would be easier for veterans to receive care in privately run hospitals and have the government pay for it. Veterans would also be allowed access to a system of proposed walk-in clinics, which would serve as a bridge between VA emergency rooms and private providers, and would require co-pays for treatment.

Worst Measles Outbreak in Decades
|
That's according to the CDC in New York and Washington states. Over the past four months, there were 200 confirmed cases in New York, the most since 1989, and 37 confirmed cases in Washington state, the most since 1996, mostly due to lowered rates of vaccinations for children in both states. There were 349 measles cases in the US in 2018, the second-highest total since measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. Through Jan. 24, the CDC reported 52 cases in seven states: Washington, Oregon, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, California and Georgia.
