University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Oral Biology Researchers Receive a Combined $6.6 Million to Study Gum Disease, Sjögren's Syndrome, Bone Loss
Researchers within the University at Buffalo Department of Oral Biology were recently awarded six grants totaling $6.6 million, helping to double funding received by the department from the previous year. The grants, awarded by the National Institutes of Health, will fund investigations that aim to better understand the bacteria behind periodontal disease, examine the influence of white blood cells on Sjögren's syndrome, and explore the effects of a key protein on bone loss.

Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College: New York Doctor Receives Humanitarian Award From AAOMS
Jerry L. Halpern, DDS, of New York, and Clinical Associate Professor of Dental Medicine at Touro College of Dental Medicine, received the Humanitarian Award for Fellows and Members in October from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) at its 100th Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Eastman Institute For Oral Health, University of Rochester: Successful Teledentistry Program Expanding
Eastman Dental's teledentistry program began 14 years ago, thanks to public and private funding, when 500 preschool children in various inner city day care centers were first examined to see if teledentistry was useful in identifying at risk children and preventing extensive treatment down the road. It proved to be very useful.

Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Receives $1.7 Million NIH Grant for Validation of Bone Scaffold Technology in Craniofacial Tissues
Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine has received a 2.5-year Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Fast-Track Grant through the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) alongside NuShores Biosciences LLC. There were a lot of bright smiles recently when Senator Terrence Murphy presented Ronnie Myers, DDS, Dean and Professor of Dental Medicine, Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York College with a check for $1.5 million to support continued growth of the school.

NYU Dentistry's Dr. Stefanie Russell Awarded NY State Health Foundation Grant to Improve Oral Health Among Vulnerable Pregnant Women
The New York State Health Foundation has awarded Stefanie Russell,
DDS, MPH, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Health
Promotion, a one-year grant of $152,680 to address oral health deficiencies
among low-income, vulnerable pregnant women. The project seeks to improve their
access to dental screening and service referrals; increase knowledge among
patients and providers about the importance of oral care during pregnancy; and
facilitate dental care during pregnancy. It will do this by locating an on-site
dental clinic at the Bellevue Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, which will be
staffed by NYU College of Dentistry providers

NYU Dentistry: Hanna Liss, '20, Wins Second Place Prize at 6th China-ASEAN Forum on Dentistry
Hanna Liss, Class of 2020, was recognized with the second place prize at the 2018 China-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Forum on Dentistry, for her presentation titled "3D Printing of Orofacial Structures: A Model for 21st Century Reconstructive Surgery." She competed in the host city of Nanning, China, against 23 other dental students from China, the 11 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and the US.
