One of the highlights - some might say
the highlight - of the holiday season in New York is the variety and richness of holiday music events. And Kent leads four of the most celebrated - and celebratory!
- Cathedral Christmas Concert at St. John the Divine (Saturday, December 8, 7 PM) features the combined choirs with orchestra performing both Baroque glories by Gabrieli and an American holiday classic, Daniel Pinkham's Christmas Cantata. And then everyone joins in the carol singing!
- Kent never ceases to relish the two renditions of Handel's Messiah that he leads every year at Carnegie Hall: the grand, 200-voice interpretation by the Oratorio Society of New York and the crystalline 35-voice rendition by Musica Sacra. The OSNY performance (Monday, December 17, 8 PM features soloists Leslie Fagan, Daniel Moody, Isaiah Bell, and Joseph Beutel; Musica Sacra's presentation (Wednesday, December 19, 7:30 PM) features Leslie Fagan, Daniel Moody, Brian Giebler, and John Brancy.
- The New Year's Eve Concert for Peace (Monday, December 31, 7 PM), a beloved annual event at St. John the Divine features Mozart's Symphony No. 29, the Symphony No. 1 of 18th-century English composer William Boyce, and three American works: I Have a Dream, Robert Convery's powerful setting of Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech, featuring baritone Sidney Outlaw; David Lang's Make peace; and the New York premiere of Alleluia by Wayne Oquin. Soprano Jamet Pittman leads the audience in "This little light of mine" before all light candles to welcome the new year with hope, joy, and affirmation. Returning are special guests Judy Collins, Paul Winter and Jason Robert Brown, and host Harry Smith.
Come to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine for
Christmas Eve services, open to all, no passes required (and note the special guests at 10:30!):
4 PM: The traditional English Service of Lessons and Carols features the Cathedral Choristers and members of the Cathedral Choir, led by Kent and Bryan Zaros: readings and anthems accompanied by harp and organ and larger-than-life puppetry to tell the Christmas story.
10:30 PM: Christmas Eve Festal Eucharist features the Cathedral Choirs and Orchestra performing Mozart's
Coronation Mass
and anthems, as well as classic Christmas carols. Special guests
Paul Winter
and
Susanna Phillips
join to celebrate the Christmas spirit.

About Kent Tritle
Kent Tritle is one of America's leading choral conductors. Called "the brightest star in New York's choral music world" by
The New York Times, he is Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City; Music Director of the
Oratorio Society of New York, the acclaimed 200-voice volunteer chorus; and Music Director of
Musica Sacra, the longest continuously performing professional chorus in New York City. In addition, Kent is Director of Choral Activities at the
Manhattan School of Music and is a member of the graduate faculty of
The Juilliard School. An acclaimed organ virtuoso, he is also the organist of the New York Philharmonic.
