Craft distilleries spared damage by Hurricane Florence
While we have sincere sympathy and concern for those citizens whose lives and loved ones have been impacted by Hurricane Florence, we are also grateful to report that the craft distilleries we contacted in North and South Carolina seem to have fared relatively well through the storm, so far.
Please contact us with any news/updates to share. Best wishes to all.

Virginia is an alcohol-control state but friendlier
to its distillers...
By John Trump, Carolina Journal
RALEIGH, NC - For North Carolina's distillers, getting their products into ABC stores is arduous and time-consuming. Distillers must first check all the boxes pertinent to federal and state laws. The state must then approve their products before distillers send those products to Raleigh for distribution to ABC stores across the state.
Which stores is up to distillers, but also largely up to the ABC boards - North Carolina has 168 - and their members, whom distillers must persuade to carry their brands. Read more.

The Devil's Cut: Virginia's spirits laws may be stifling a craft distilling revolution and leading some to consider moving out of state.
By Eric J. Wallace, VA Growler
|
|
|
"Name another business that has to give away more than half of the money it makes? I sell a bottle of vodka in my tasting room for $29.89, but, after the ABC takes their cut, and I pay (packaging, materials costs, labor, and so on) we profit just $2!" - Christine Riggleman, CEO and master distiller at Silverback Distillery. |
It's a blistering Saturday evening in June, and the Silverback Distillery tasting room is packed. Visitors from across the state crowd two 10-seat soapstone bars and a room-centering island.
...Silverback is one of two distilleries situated along Nelson County's Highway 151, a 15-mile stretch of road known among craft connoisseurs as "Alcohol Alley." Gauging by the foot traffic, you'd think business was booming. But compared to neighboring cideries, wineries, and breweries, that's simply not the case. ...
For Virginia's craft distillers, "a tasting room is essentially a break-even business," says Scott Harris, owner of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company. Harris says Virginia's hyper-regulatory spirits laws make it difficult to operate in the state. For instance, about 55 percent of the sale price from every bottle Catoctin sells goes to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority and state coffers. Read more.

Whiskey fuels growth in Iowa
New laws mean an influx of whiskey and bourbon production in the Hawkeye State.
By Jeff Charis-Carlson, US News & World Report Contributor
SWISHER, Iowa - To Jeff Quint, it only makes sense for Iowa, as the nation's top corn-producing state, to become a national leader in the distilling of bourbon and other corn whiskey. And recent legislative changes at the state and national level are helping to make that vision a reality.
"What's happening today is our corn leaves the state at $4 a bushel, and that $4 bushel of corn comes back into the state as $80 of whiskey," says Quint, owner of Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery. "I think it would be nice in Iowa if we could get that extra $76 on every bushel and become an exporter of bourbon, not an importer." Read more

By Margaret Ayala, Got Rum? Publishers
What inspired you to build a rum distillery and why on the island of Maui? In my pre-distillery days, I was a senior corporate executive in the cable television industry. The last company I worked for was acquired in 1991 and I got a nice "golden parachute" check. I decided I would work on my own ventures going forward. Since then, I built several companies but always wanted to do something with my son. Hawaii had been our family's favorite place to vacation during my corporate career and.... I wanted to ultimately retire in Maui. Starting a family business with my son in Maui seemed to make a lot of sense. He and I started exploring various Hawaii based business opportunities including coffee, flowers, organic fruit crops, but in the process discovered that there were no distilleries in Hawaii. Hawaii is one of the great sugar growing islands of the world so we decided on building a distillery and making rum our flagship product. Read more

The Blackwater Distilling Redesign - Case Study
By Tribe brand design agency
Named after a booze-toting merchant vessel that was overtaken by none other than Blackbeard and sent to the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay, Sloop Betty Vodka has enjoyed a much greater destiny than her ill-fated namesake. But not without some choppy water along the way.
Blackwater's belle had become so respected and sought after, she'd taken on a life of her own. In fact, Betty was drowning out the overall Blackwater brand. Her success was a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless.
It didn't stop there. Picaroon Rum, Blackwater's other popular product line, had likewise started to develop its own identity. The success of these individual products meant there was very little shared brand...
