Congratulations to the following SMUHSD students who were recognized at the Millbrae - San Andreas Lake Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution Awards meeting on January 18:

San Mateo High School Students Artwork to be Featured at SFO Museum
San Mateo High School student artwork will be on exhibit at the SFO Museum from February 14 to May 9, 2019. The exhibit consists of ten panels showcasing a variety of media from all visual art courses at San Mateo High School. The display is titled "A World of Possibilities" and includes original painting, collage, digital media, photography and drawing by the Bearcats.
The exhibit is coordinated by SMHS CTE Coordinator Nancy Kane, SMHS Visual Arts Department teachers and the exhibit curators at SFO.

San Mateo Union High School District Placed on the College Board's 9th Annual AP® District Honor Roll
The San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 9th Annual AP
®
District Honor Roll.
To be included on the 9th Annual Honor Roll, SMUHSD
increased the number of students participating in AP since 2016 while also increasing or maintaining the
percentage
of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or highe
r.
Reaching these goals shows
that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

SFGate ranked SMUHSD #10 this year (up from #11 in 2018) in its top Bay Area School District lists.

Student Art Show is this Wednesday, February 6
Join students and San Mateo Union High School District staff at a Student Art Show on February 6, 2019.
The event will be held at the District Office, 650 N. Delaware Street in San Mateo from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
The art will be on display from February 4 - 8, 2019.

Parent/Guardian Education Event - The Yes The Brain - This Thursday, February 7
Join us for "The Yes Brain" with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, this Thursday, February 7 at 7 p.m.
In this presentation, Dr. Tina Payne Bryson will discuss ways to encourage in our kids a positive, engaged approach to life.
She will discuss specific strategies for creating Yes Brain opportunities that allow your kids to thrive-both now and as they grow into adulthood.
Admission is $5 per person in advance and $10 at the door.

San Mateo High School Jazz Concert is February 13
Save the Date - the Mateo Jazz Concert is Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center.
The jazz concert, directed by Attilio Tribuzi, will also feature special guests - Borel Middle School Jazz Band, directed by Nicholas Faire and the Bowditch Middle School Jazz Band, directed by Jason McElroy.

Sweetheart Serenade is February 14 at San Mateo Performing Arts Center
Join the San Mateo High School and Burlingame High School Choirs for their Sweetheart Serenade on February 14 at
7 p.m. at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center.
This concert will feature special guest choirs from both Bowditch Middle and Burlingame Intermediate Schools.
Donations: $10 General, $5 Student

Aragon's Latino Festival is March 1
Join us at Aragon High School's Fifth Annual Festival Latino on Friday, March 1.
Don't miss out on food, music, dance, and fun from 5-9 p.m. in Aragon's South Gym, located at 900 Alameda in San Mateo.

Save the Date: March 2 is the Dream Dinners and HHS Middle Eastern Club Volunteer Event
On Saturday, March 2, Hillsdale High School's Middle Eastern Club with Dream Dinners Belmont and Friends and Family Community Connection will come together with hundreds of students and community volunteers to fight hunger. Together they aim to package over 50,000 meals.
The meals will serve families in need locally as well as in Tanzania, Haiti, Mexico and catastrophe-afflicted regions.

Save the Date: Free Teen Heart Screening Event for SMUHSD Students is Sunday, April 14
This FREE teen heart screening event run by volunteers and sponsored in part by the District, is open to ALL students in the San Mateo Union High School District. It will be held at San Mateo High School and will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2019.
Each student who chooses to participate will receive a FREE 60-90 minute heart screening, which includes a health history questionnaire review, EKG test, and an echocardiogram. Undiagnosed heart defects in youth can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death. These tests would normally cost between $1,000 - $3,000.
Registration for this event will open March 6.

Burlingame Student Film Festival is March 19
The Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame and the Burlingame Environmental Club have partnered to create the second annual environmental Film Festival in Burlingame.
This festival, which will take place on Tuesday, March 19 at the Burlingame High School Theatre, is open to 4th to 12th grade students who live or attend school in San Mateo County.
Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 6.

Call for Poetry Submissions in San Mateo County
San Mateo County's Poet Laureate
Aileen Cassinetto is seeking submissions to inaugurate her campaign, "Speak Poetry." Poets of any age living in San Mateo County are invited to submit their work based on the theme, "In My Community."
Deadline for submissions is this March 1.
