High School Photography Summer Residency Workshop
|
July 7-13th, we will be hosting a week-long intensive program for high school students who are currently in their sophomore or junior year. It is sure to be fun and informative.
The one week residency Photography Workshop will be an intensive exploration of the many facets that make up photography in the 21st century. We will cover all main areas of the medium with one-two day intensive lessons. We will begin in the studio covering the workflow of lighting both still life and portraits. Then we will move into our state of the art digital labs where we will learn how to harness the full power of Photoshop and make large prints from the prior two days in the studio. Finally, we will spend two days in the darkroom exploring the alchemy that make traditional photography such a magical process. We will also be going on a field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to visit their Prints and Photographs collections where you will see first-hand, prints made by the masters of the medium. Finally, the workshop will culminate with an exhibition of the work produced by the students that parents and the public will be invited to attend to view.
If you are interested in learning more about this or recommending it to a high school student you know, please see more information and how to register

Artist Quote
In 2017, over 70,000 people died of drug overdose in the United States. Approx. half of these deaths are attributed to heroin use and the synthetic opioid Fentanyl. In my home town of Philadelphia, over 1200 people died. As a citizen, I am deeply concerned that not enough is being done to help those who are suffering. This exhibition is a call to action. Everyday, approx 191 people die from a drug overdose in the US. How many more people need to die in order for our elected officials to take charge and implement creative solutions to end overdose deaths?

10 Week Photography Workshop for Philadelphia High School Students
|
|
For a 4th term we are offering our Saturday High School Workshops, free of charge, to Philadelphia Public High School students who were nominated by their art teachers. The next offering will begin in April.
We again want to thank Photography class of 1998 alumna Laura Singer and The Paul & Emily Singer Family Foundation. Without their generous support we could not have made this very important effort a reality. We plan to continue offering these workshops in upcoming terms.
The students come for ten Saturdays to learn about all aspects of modern photography. The classes are lead by Ashley Smith with the help of current senior Kylie West. These high school students spend their time photographing on campus and in the studio, visiting exhibitions at the PMA, and working in our digital labs to learn about editing, retouching and printing. The 10 week course culminates in students giving presentations about their final body of work.
If you know a Philadelphia public high school student with a passion for photography whom you'd like to nominate, email photog@drexel.edu
