Happy New Year, Fellows!
As the Foundation and our Network of Fellows has reached beyond 32 years and 630 strong, many of you have suggested we look at how Fellows might be able to contribute financially to the Foundation and our programs. Lissa is putting together a small committee of interested Fellows to consider options for how best to do this, whether creating a donor-advised fund or contributing directly to the Foundation. It will never be our intention to compete in fundraising with everyone's good efforts in the non-profit sector, but rather to enhance the programs we have and find modest ways to expand our impact while honoring the donor's wishes for the Foundation to continue to have a strong imprint of Fellow leadership and interests. Opportunity: PGM One Summit, May, 2019
People of the Global Majority in Outdoors, Nature and Environment (
PGM One) is holding their third annual summit in Philadelphia May 8-10, 2019. PGM One convenes
emerging and established professionals of color who work in the environmental and outdoors movement to share, learn, collaborate, heal, celebrate, build community, find support, and sharpen their analysis of racial equity in their field. Each of the prior two summits have convened 250-300 people doing a variety of work in these fields. Switzer Fellows who may be interested in attending can find more information
here (registration will open soon). If you would like to attend but would need support doing so, please contact
Erin. We can offer some support for Fellows to attend (up to $500) via the Professional Development Fund. We'd like to support this conference, and sending Fellows is a great way to do that. If we get a group of you attending, we'll connect you so you can get together while you're there!

Switzer Leadership Grant Outcomes: Air Quality and Environmental Justice along the U.S./Mexico border
Carolina Prado worked with the Environmental Health Coalition for one year under a Switzer Leadership Grant. Read about two projects led by Carolina which examined air quality, public health and environmental justice in two communities in San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico, including how Carolina trained citizen scientists to monitor environmental and public health indicators, map them, and successfully advocate for better land-use and trucking regulations in their communities.

Upcoming Network call: Re-visioning environmental leadership for equity and impact: The Switzer Foundation's journey
Lissa will present the Switzer Foundation's organizational journey to embed equity into our programs and operations. For the past two years, we have been examining every aspect of our operations to uncover internal and implicit biases in our Fellowship and grants programs, understand the impact of historic structural racial biases in the environmental field, and take steps to fostering a community of environmental leaders who can develop the skills needed to advance equity in environmental impact.
