Attendance and Tardies
We are well into the first nine weeks of the school year and students and teachers are building relationships and working towards a shared commitment of success. Students are working hard at learning grade level curriculum in all content areas. Parents, please ensure that your child arrives to school on time daily. Daily attendance has a strong and positive impact on student achievement. The school bell rings at 8:15 a.m. and we are having way too many students late to class each morning. We appreciate your support and cooperation.
Our Fall Book Fair was an AWESOME success with a gross sale of $3,977.84. We would like to extend a special "Thank You" to everyone who contributed to our school reaching beyond its projected sale goal. Please note that we will have a Spring Book Fair and if you did not have the opportunity to purchase items last week, you will be able to participate in our Spring Book Fair 5/20-5/24/19.
After School and Saturday Tutoring Underway
Tutoring forms went home last week on Monday, September 10th to specific students.
Parents, please note that you will have to provide transportation for your student for the first two weeks. Bus transportation will not be available until the week of October 1, 2018 for both after school and Saturday tutoring.
After school tutoring began Tuesday, September 18th and will now continue on specific Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 p.m.- 5:45 p.m. Click on

Saturday school tutoring will start next Saturday, September 22nd from 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Click on

Progress Reports Issued This Friday
This Friday, September 21st, student Progress Reports will go home. Parents, please take the time to review your child's Progress Report. If you need to request a Parent/Teacher meeting with your child's teacher, please contact the main office at 407-354-2630.

Classroom Spotlight of the Week
Mrs. Arbelo's Amazing Class!
In the following pictures, you can appreciate my students engaged in their center activities during their "Extra Hour." Some students were working in the i-Ready Reading Technology Center; other students were in the Math and Science Vocabulary Words Center (using the Frayer's model); while others were in the Independent Reading Center. At the teacher's table, our focus was to recount key details of a text, and explaining how those details support the main idea.

Mrs. Cowan's Guidance Corner
September's Character Trait of the Month = RESPECT

This week our Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Cowan, presented a 20-25 minute classroom guidance presentation. She talked about students using "kind words" towards their peers and adults.
Tangelo Park's Character Trait for the Month is RESPECT and all students will receive tips and pointers during the morning or afternoon announcements supporting the trait throughout September.

Community Support
Rollins College volunteers on campus last month (SPARC)
On August 25th, Rollins College sent a busload of volunteers to Tangelo Park, as part of the college's SPARC Day (Service, Passion, Action, Rollins College). This is where all first-year students, on their first day as Rollins' students, are sent out to a variety of community partners to spend a day learning about their new hometown while being of service to the community. They did a terrific job beautifying our campus and providing assistance to teachers organizing curricular materials.
Thanks to the SPARC volunteers for making our school sparkle!

MPLC - Multilingual Parent Leadership Committee
Wednesday, September 26th

Greetings Parents,
On Wednesday, September 26th, 2018 at 8:30 a.m., our Parent Liason and ESOL Compliance Specialist will be hosting "pastries with parents" to inform our ELL parents about the resources available to their students at Tangelo Park Elementary.
The meeting will be held in English with translation for Spanish and Haitian Creole. The agenda will include, school policies and discipline procedures, as well as, curriculum resources available to students. Part of the meeting will be held in the computer lab to assist parents in accessing their child's OCPS account. Thank you and we hope to see you there!

Bring your Parent to Physical Education Week

Introduction
The purpose of the activity is to introduce ourselves and promote the Physical Education program to parents so they will engage with Physical Education throughout the year. A major goal of this program is to encourage families to be physically active together at home and in the community.
Parents can attend Physical Education class between September 24th and 28th.
- Parents of K-2nd graders will have the opportunity to participate on Monday 9/24, Tuesday 9/25, and Wednesday 9/26
- Parents of 3rd-5th graders will participate on Wednesday 9/26, Thursday 9/27, or Friday 9/28
* Parents, in order to participate in this activity, please sign up as a volunteer through
OCPS ADDitions. This is a quick and easy security step for our schools and definitely worth a few moments from your day. (All OCPS campuses have very strict security procedures to protect our children and staff; this is just one of those steps that help to make that a reality. Yet, it is very quick to accomplish!)

Two quality programs available to all of our Tigers!
Our mentoring school organizations
Young Ladies of Distinction and
Young Men of Promise were created to teach our youth about building positive relationships, displaying quality character traits, and exhibiting positive behaviors towards their peers and adults. In addition, students who join either of these organizations will experience a great deal of fun social activities and life-skill lessons!

Dr. Bloom
|
Dr. Benjamin Bloom of the University of Chicago conducted a five-year study of leading artists, athletes, and scholars. It consisted of anonymous interviews with the top twenty performers in various fields, including pianists, Olympic swimmers, tennis players, sculptors, mathematicians, and neurologists. That information was supplemented by additional interviews with those people's families and teachers. Bloom and his team of researchers sought to find clues to how these high achievers developed.
What they discovered was that drive and determination - not talent - led to their success.
