President's Message - Matthew Page, CRPS®, CFP®, CAP®
Matthew Page
As we end the first quarter of 2018, now is a good time to reflect on how the year has started and discuss what lies ahead.

For the first meeting of the year, we had Dan Staszak, CPA, MS (Tax) discuss the tax reform legislation that was passed in 2017. Mr. Staszak did a tremendous job of making tax law interesting, funny and understandable. We had near record attendance for the meeting.

The February meeting was presented by Tom Wolfrum, Esq. and Peter Langley, Esq. They discussed the nature of premarital agreements.  One take away from this meeting was that premarital agreements are something planners should be discussing with many of their clients, but generally do not.  Also, during February, we had our first study group.  Our Pro Bono director, Landon Tymochko, graciously hosted the group in his Folsom office.  The group discussed longevity risk, and how CFP® practitioners are adjusting their retirement and income models to incorporate longer life expectancy.

We finished February with a joint mixer (see picture) along with the Sacramento Estate Planning Council.  Our longtime strategic partner, Doug Bertsch, generously sponsored the mixer.  Thank you Doug Bertsch for making our first mixer for 2018 so much fun!  Continue reading here

Past President - Jenny Hood, CFP®
Calling all Past Presidents!

Having become a newly past president myself, I very much appreciate all of the work and dedication you have given to our chapter. Last year, we had a night dedicated to showing you our appreciation and also wanting to hear your thoughts and feedback on how to move our chapter forward into the future. The night was a success! We realize the importance of the knowledge and experience that each of our past presidents possess and we want to find a way to continue to have an open dialogue between you and our current board. I was recently speaking to a board member from the FPA of Orange County and he told me that their past presidents meet on a quarterly basis. The quarterly meetings are causal, but he said that is has been a great way to keep the past presidents involved and also give them a chance to catch up. I loved the idea and thought it was something that we should start in our own chapter. Please be on the look out for more details and I look forward to seeing you and catching up soon!

President-Elect - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
Hello Everyone,

It's hard to believe that Spring is already here!

We had our first study group meeting in February to discuss how we are helping clients plan for increased longevity. Thank you to everyone who came and shared their ideas. Though many of us do not yet have clients who are 100 years old, we can see this happening in the future as quite a few are in their late 80's-90's and still quite active.

Since there are already a few conferences and events happening in the financial community in May (NAPFA Conference, FPA NorCal, NexGen Speed Mentoring Event), our next Study Group will be scheduled for June. Please watch our website www.fpanc.org for the date and topic (perhaps a case study). This will be a lunch meeting at Matt Page's office:

Lucas Group Financial Planners, Inc.
1545 River Park Dr., Suite 401
Sacramento, CA 95815

Membership - Dusty Hoetger, CFP®, RICP® & Patrick "PJ" Johnson, CLU
My membership with the FPA continues to impress me! It has helped me grow as a planner, provided quality resource partners to connect with my clients, and the opportunity to network with my peers who, more often than not, become new friends. For those of you who are already members, you most likely feel the same way! And if you don't, please reach out to me and let me know your thoughts on how we can do better!

Our goal is to spread the message about the value of becoming an FPA member. And we want to provide all of our members with the tools to make it easier to articulate the value of membership. We all need to Be a Part of It! Coming shortly, we will have a useful "matrix" of membership options as well as highlighting some key benefits. This will be readily available and will make it easy for you to help increase our membership and continue to strengthen our chapter.

As previously mentioned, we are continuing to put together Happy Hour Mixers and the next one happens this month. You don't want to miss out on this! What better way to end tax season then to get together, relax, and connect with others? The mixer is in Folsom at the Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar. The cost is FREE to members and includes 2 drink tickets and appetizers. For non-members, the cost is $10 which is an inexpensive way to come check us out and see what a great group we are and learn more about becoming a member! We encourage members to bring a non-member! A big thank you to our sponsor - Launi Cooper with Retirement Funding Solutions. Sign up here

Pro Bono - Landon Tymochko, MBA, CFP®
Doesn't it seem like things never slow down. As for my family, we are looking forward to April 16 th (my wife does taxes), and a trip to Cancun in early May (don't hate me!)

With all of the things going on in our lives and businesses, it sometimes seems hard to squeeze in some Pro Bono work. However, small things sometimes make a big difference, so I would encourage you to look for those small opportunities regularly. I recently participated in the FPA State Advocacy Day, and was surprised to discover a number pro bono opportunities that our members were invited to participate in.

Here are some Pro Bono opportunities and ideas for you to consider:
Financial Literacy fair at the California State Capitol - Tuesday, April 17th - we are looking for 2-3 people to host a table on the grounds of the state capitol to talk with people about the FPA and how working with a financial planner can help.

Engage with your local state or federal representative - they often have activities supporting the local community for you to engage and share your expertise.

Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) is going strong right now helping low income citizens prepare their taxes. If you prepare taxes as part of your practice, I'd encourage you to consider joining this great organization to help folks that need your help. Read more here
