IITRHF was founded on 07/07/2007
Now in its 10th year of operations, here is a summary.
IITRHF programs:
- Annual Heritage Excellence Awards (~50 awards/ year)
- Annual Business plan competition awards (~6 awards/ year)
- Heritage internships at US Academic Institutions
- One year industry internships in US for IITR students (~upto 5 recipients/ year)
Accomplishments to date: Over 150 alumni donors have joined hands resulting in these milestones:
- Established a Faculty Chair in Soil Dynamics
- Established annual Best Faculty award for Rs 2 Lacs
- One year paid internships at Cisco, USA for 13 students
- Arranged for 15+ guest lectures at IITR campus
- Awarded 40+ awards in Annual Business Plan competition
- Awarded 48+ travel grants for Research Paper Presentations
- Distributed 400+ Heritage Excellence Awards, and
- Coordinated equipment donation to IITR worth US $250K
All this has been possible because of alumni contributions and volunteer efforts. Please spread the word to your fellow Roorkee alums to donate to IITRHF, and check with your employer for matching contributions to double your donation.

IITRHF welcomes Director Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi
|
|
Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi
, an expert in wireless communication technology, has been an IITian throughout his academic as well as professional career. He completed his BTech, MTech and PhD in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1986, 1988 and 1995, respectively. During his career as faculty he served at the department of electronics engineering at IIT (Banaras Hindu University) from 1994 to 1996. Since 1999, he has been teaching at the department of electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur. He served as head of the department in 2009-2010 and dean of research development from 2011 to 2014.

Prof. Satyandra Gupta supporting Heritage Internship Opportunities
|
|
Prof. Satyandra K. Gupta is the Director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and the Smith International Professor in the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department at USC Viterbi School of Engineering. He is interested in automation problems arising in computer-aided design, manufacturing automation, and robotics. Prior to joining USC, he was a professor and the founding director of the Maryland Robotics Center and the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory at the University of Maryland. He also served as a Program Director for the National Robotics Initiative at the National Science Foundation from September 2012 to September 2014. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, he was a Research Scientist in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Gupta received a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Roorkee (currently known as the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) in 1988. He received a Gold Medal for securing the first rank in his B.E. class (1988) and a Gold Medal for the best Engineering Design Project (1988). He received a Master of Technology (M. Tech.) in Production Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1989. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1994. He received Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in 2014.
USC Center for Advanced Manufacturing
USC Viterbi School of Engineering inaugurated Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) on Feb 24, 2017. This center will focus on enabling innovation through advances in manufacturing. Goals for the new center include: (1) conduct basic and applied research to enable advances in manufacturing, (2) develop interdisciplinary manufacturing education programs, (3) support outreach to K-12 community in SoCal region, and (4) provide manufacturing services to students and inventors.
The center will develop next generation technologies to enable realization of products that are not possible with the current technologies. Technologies developed at the center will also speed up the time needed to bring new products to market and reduce the waste in the manufacturing operations. The center will enhance the learning experiences of students at USC Viterbi School of Engineering and train them to become successful innovators and entrepreneurs.
USC has a lot of expertise in robotics, 3D Printing, Internet of Things, Big Data, machine learning, augmented & virtual Reality, systems engineering, and materials. These areas are expected to play an important role in advanced manufacturing. CAM brings this expertise together to enable innovation in manufacturing.
CAM will enable students to have hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing area. The center will also help area businesses and scholars across USC who may need to rapidly prototype their new concepts. It will help local companies by developing manufacturing technologies to meet their needs and giving them access to machines and equipment in the center.

Prof. Brij Agarwal supporting Heritage Internship Opportunities

Prof. Brij Agrawal is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and US Naval Postgraduate School Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in Monterey, CA. He is also Academician of International Academy of Astronautics. He is a world leader in satellite communications, high energy lasers, relay mirror spacecraft and adaptive space optics. He strongly believes in hands-on education and research. |

The research in his center is progressing in several challenging areas, such as flexible spacecraft control, acquisition, tracking and pointing, optical beam control, adaptive optics, beam jitter, adaptive control, control moment gyros control, and spacecraft design. The center has several state-of-art laboratories for instruction and research.
This research is very important for US national security, communications, imaging, and for various satellite uses and high energy lasers.

This is Fltsatcom Laboratory. It hosts qualification model of Navy Fltsatcom Satellite. Currently three such satellites are operating in geosynchronous orbit. It provided communication between naval aircraft, ships, ground stations, and Strategic Air Command. It has ground support equipment allowing communications with the satellite and testing its telemetry and command function. It is used for instruction and research.

This is Segmented Mirror Telescope Laboratory in clean room. The space telescope has 3 meter in diameter primary mirror and it consists of six segments. For large telescopes, like James Webb Telescope, the mirror has to be stowed during launch and deployed in orbit due to launch vehicle diameter constraints. The surface of these telescope have to to maintained within 30 nanometer rms surface error. In order to maintain this surface accuracy, 156 actuators are used in each segment. The surface error is determined by adaptive optics sensors and voltage to each actuator is applied based on the optimal control computer algorithms to correct surface errors. These segments have to be phased accurately so they act like a part of a large mirror. Each segment has six coarse actuators and three fine actuator for phasing. Several students have done Ph.D. and masters thesis work using this testbed. This is unique test bed in USA for doing research in optics, structures and control.

IITRHF
Academic Industry Collaboration
program was established several years ago, with a long-term partnership with Cisco USA, that led to faculty and equipment grants for telephony and security lab at IITR campus, and fully paid 1-year internships to IITR students at Cisco USA.
3rd batch of interns at Cisco (2016-17):
After two successful batches of 13 students, the following two students are hosted by Cisco USA at a budget of ~Rs 1 crore ($160,000). In addition to IITR students, IITRHF has fecilitated inclusion of students from IIT Gandhinagar and JP Institute of IT at Noida in this program. Current Directors of both IITGN and JP Institute of IT are IITR Alumni.
