The bounty of late summer in the Flathead Valley from Malison Farms
Hello dear friends and clients,

The fires are dwindling and we have our beautiful Flathead September back--warm days and cool evenings. It's simply gorgeous. I think this is my favorite time of year (of course, I say that about all times of year in the Flathead Valley)!

While the summer winds down, the market is still strong particularly in the sweet spot of $100K to $500K properties and a little acreage helps! That being said, August brought over a dozen waterfront sales on Flathead Lake.
Golf properties are also popular.
Although the 2018 year to date median list price is a bit higher than 2017 ($658,000 compared to $595,000), more importantly median sale price is also higher when comparing 2018 to 2017 ($384,000 compared to $295,000). It seems most of our buyers are coming from Arizona, California, Washington and Texas.

Fall brings some very local and enjoyable events--Tamarack Time and the holiday fun. Many of our eating establishments stay open and have weekly events ranging from Bingo to Brush and Brew to live music. Have an evening out in the area. It's a lot of fun.

The Flathead is an exciting and beautiful place to live. If
you are thinking of listing your property, or buying a property in Montana, my experience, record and expertise will successfully guide you through the negotiation process toward the right price. Call, text or email me. We'll have dinner
(
I have an in with the local sushi place)!
See you soon.

Cheers!
Denise

Testimonial:

If you are thinking about buying property or a home in the Bigfork area, Denise Lang is absolutely your best bet! I had experienced a real estate nightmare selling my home in Washington with an inexperienced agent and knew that I needed to find someone with knowledge and integrity for my purchase here in Bigfork. After talking to Denise on the phone for just a few minutes, I was confident that she was the woman for the job. She understood my priorities and assured me that I would have some desirable options in my price range. I set aside three days for real estate shopping in late June and Denise found the perfect home for me at a better-than-expected price. I am still absolutely tickled every morning when I wake up and realize that I am living my Montana dream!

But there is more to my story...my closing date in Washington state was on a Friday and since I had not yet closed here in Montana, I was not able to move in until Monday. I was feeling panicked, but Denise came to my rescue. She graciously hosted me and my two friends who had helped me move until Monday morning. I don't know how may real estate agents would go above and beyond as Denise did. She set me at ease when I was in a difficult situation and made me feel welcome in my new hometown. I am so very grateful for Denise's kindness and hospitality!

Denise's Kitchen Corner... Butternut Squash Soup  with Chipotle Cream
Ingredients
3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 medium butternut squash, halved lengthwise, seeds discarded, washed, and reserved
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 medium onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
6 cups chicken broth, divided
2 teaspoons minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo
Chipotle Cream:
1 teaspoon minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo
1/2 cup sour cream
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Using 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, grease the sliced surface of the squash and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Arrange on a baking sheet and roast until very tender, about 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. In a large heavy pot over medium-high heat, add the remaining olive oil, onion, celery, and carrot, then season with a pinch of salt. Sauté until just tender, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 2 minutes. Scoop the butternut squash flesh into the pot and stir. Add 4 cups of the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer until the vegetables are very tender, about 30 minutes.Turn off the heat and using an immersion blender, carefully puree the soup until very smooth. If necessary, add more of the remaining stock to create desired consistency.

Mix in 2 teaspoons of the chipotle into the soup, and season with salt and pepper, to taste. In a small bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon of chipotle and the sour cream. Season the chipotle cream with salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer the soup to bowls. Top each with a dollop of chipotle cream and serve.

Serve this hearty bisque for dinner on a cool autumn night, or pour it into individual shot glasses for a savvy appetizer.

Denise's Book Corner...

I read this book when I was in the 6th grade and thoughtI should read it again. It was a lot to chew on for a middle schooler. I loved Scout and even identified with her, as I'm sure lots of young girls do. Her curiosity and courage was and is appealing. You've all probably read, or at least seen the movie so I won't go into the plot. However, I do want to comment on the many layers that Harper Lee tells. Incidentally, the story is loosely based on the author's observations of her own family, neighbors and childhood events in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama.

In literary circles, the "mockingbird" represents innocence. To me, it represents truth. I see a consistent conflict between truth and reality that threads through the story, from the mystery of "Boo" Radley to the accusation and trial of Tom Robinson, to Atticus's struggle with what he believes is right and the reality of the times. The juxtaposition of compassion, humor, prejudice and tolerance are strong themes in this story.

As an adult reading this book, I identify more with "Boo" and Atticus, Scout's father, both fine literary characters. Atticus's relationship with the children is so honest and mature. He talks to Scout like an adult and she in turn responds so charmingly. He is virtuous and straightforward, without being saintly or beatific. "Boo" is the mystery who keeps the reader on the edge. To Kill a Mockingbird is worth the read or re-read and has often been subject to campaigns for removal from public classrooms.
