Adult VIB:
News of the World -  by Paulette Jiles

Children's VIB:
The Girl Who Drank the Moon  - by Kelly Barnhill
September 30, 2016
Dear Friends,

Welcome to our October newsletter! As the incoming owners, we thought we should try to add a personal note to each of our monthly newsletters going forward; to tell you a bit about what's going on at Tattered Cover, and to highlight some books we're super excited about. In fact, let's start there:

Len's Oct. Pick:  The Last True Love Story  by Brendan Kiely
Seventeen year-old Hendrix (lonely, kind of awkward boy) and Corrina (lonely, bad-ass guitar playing girl), and Hendrix's grandfather (Gpa), suffering from Alzheimer's, have ditched everything and are driving from California to New York. This is a book about finding yourself, about romantic love, and familial love.  As you would expect from Brendan Kiely, the writing is exquisite and the characters are perfectly drawn. Great for not only teen readers but adults, too, especially anyone caring for an aging parent or grandparent.

Kristen's Oct. Pick:  Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Is there one moment that set the rest of your life in motion? One decision, that if made differently, would have you led down an alternate path? Dark Matter explores, through ingenious plot twists and wonderful prose, what would happen if you could troll the multitude of universes - aka, the multiverse - that are created with each forking decision you make. It's Schrodinger's Cat come to life to the power of infinity. It's also about the power of love over infinity. This clever and very readable book is really a work of science fiction, but then again it's not. The themes and characters are familiar and comfortable. Great for book clubs.

In addition to what we're reading, our Director of Buying and Associate Frontlist Buyer, Cathy Langer and Stephanie Coleman respectively (known heretofore as Cathanie), are so stoked about  News of the World  by Paulette Giles, we've made it our Very Impressive Book (V.I.B.) for the month. When Cathanie likes a book, take notice. Seriously. More on the V.I.B. below.

October is also unofficially turning out to be young adult fiction month at Tattered Cover. Not only are we hosting the inaugural Colorado Teen Book Con and it's related YA Author Happy Hour (see below for info on both), but we're very excited to welcome a true master of YA Lit, Laurie Halse Anderson (best known for  Speak), later in the month. (Our entire schedule of both adult and kid events is pretty spectacular in October.)

Aside from the books, we're in the midst of two really big changes, both of which are designed to serve you better.

First, we're reimagining our coffee shop business. Our new manager, Jeremy Patlen (who comes to us from a wonderful bookstore cafe in NYC) is creating a new menu (with fresh, local ingredients) and other new innovations. (Be on the look for very new Nitro Brew Cold Coffee in our downtown store!).

And second, we're implementing a shiny, new, and modern computer system. Everything from our cash registers to our inventory control system to our financial system is getting a digital facelift. It's a huge undertaking that will improve every facet of our business. Look for that to be in place some time after the holidays.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or thoughts about Tattered Cover, we'd love to hear from you.

Happy reading!

Pulitzer Prize nominated author Nicholas Carr is back with another intellectually engaging and witty book about technology in the modern world. Carr's previous works include the acclaimed book  The Glass Cage: How Our Computers Are Changing Us and the  New York Times bestselling book  The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains. In  Utopia is Creepy, Carr turns his eye to the people behind the technology. This look at Silicon Valley questions whether technology is the panacea that many of its strongest proponents believe it is.  Kirkus Review notes that  Utopia is Creepy "reminds us that critical thinking is the best way to view the mixed blessings of rampant technology."

Tickets are  available now and include a copy of  Utopia is Creepy.

Tattered Cover Staff Recommendations
by Paulette Jiles

News of the World is the perfect choice for just about any reader and will be my favorite handsell for the Fall season. Traveling news reader Captain Kidd and his young charge Johanna make an odd but captivating and colorful duo as they make their way through lawless post-Civil War Texas, heading to San Antonio on a journey that everyone they encounter understands to be so dangerous as to be foolhardy. Practically a death-wish. Onward they go, in an affectionate battle of wills, with the Captain hell-bent on delivering Johanna, a recently and reluctantly freed Indian captive, to her relatives in South Texas and Johanna equally determined to remain with Kidd. Paulette Jiles' prose is lyrical and  News of the World is a splendidly entertaining and very moving novel. - Cathy Langer, Director of Buying

by Brit Bennett

The Mothers is a truly stunning, coming-of-age debut that begins with a secret - a secret so big that its ripples affect the fate of a driving seventeen year-old, Nadia, her friend Aubrey, and her boyfriend Luke. Their story is set in a tight-knit, modern African-American community in Southern California, narrated by a chorus of gossiping "mothers" or church ladies who cause trouble with their persistent meddling in attempts to untangle the webs of their suspicions. Brit Bennett's emotional awareness shines through her writing and the characters she developed. I was left asking - what if these characters were dealt a different hand, or what if they made different choices? This is an insightful, well-crafted debut by a talented and special new storyteller. - S tephanie Coleman, Associate Frontlist Buyer

by Neil Gaiman

There are a handful of writers who ply their craft with a deep understanding of that craft and its history, and Neil Gaiman might just be their king. This collection of Gaiman's speeches, introductions to published works, essays, and articles, is a love letter to the written word, to genre fiction, and to comics/graphic novels. This is NOT only for fans of Gaiman, but for any writer, aspiring writer, or student of writing. It ranks up there with Stephen King's  On Writing. SIDENOTE: I listened to the audiobook of  Cheap Seats , read by the author. It is possible that there is not a more pleasing voice on the planet than that of Neil Gaiman. You can buy the CDs or download a digital audiobook by  clicking here . - Len Vlahos, Incoming Owner

by Beth Macy

The hook for  Truevine  is incredible on its own. Two African American Albino brothers are kidnapped from tobacco fields and forced to work as circus freaks in the early 20th-century until their mother starts an unprecedented legal battle for fair treatment. The reality of this book is so much more.  Truevine  captures a time and place that so many seem to want to shove into the corner of our history books, hoping it won't see the light of day. The racism of the Jim Crow South and the popularity of circus sideshows that made a spectacle of that which was different converge in a powerful way on the lives of George and Willie Muse, but this story is one that extends beyond them. Macy captures that spirit of the people and places that created this tragedy, leaving no stone unturned and no story untold as she traces the brothers' path through an entire century. -  Becca Chavez, Communication and Content Associate

by Zora Neale Hurston

What a shock to discover that this novel, first published in 1937 and now considered an American classic, was out of print for 30 years. Zora Neale Hurston's gift with language and storytelling sings from every page as Janie Crawford journeys to self-discovery through three marriages, a devastating hurricane, and heartbreaking loss. Forced into a loveless marriage at 16 by her grandmother, Janie is used as cheap labor by her first husband, and a career asset by her second. Only with the much younger Tea Cake does she find real love and her true self. With its straightforward portrayal of African American culture in 1930s Florida, this fine novel is devoid of an agenda beyond the portrayal of a strong woman coming into her own. - Cathy Langer, Director of Buying

by Meg Medina

I was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, the big, ugly city on the Northern border of the Bronx. Queens, NY - the big, ugly borough of NYC to the east (where my beloved Mets play) - has a lot in common with my home town. Maybe that's why I was so captivated by this book, which takes place almost entirely in Queens. The setting was really familiar. But I don't think so. The truth,  Yaqui  and its irreverent title is simply a beautiful coming of age novel. Like the books of Jason Reynolds, the story of Piddy Sanchez and her effort to steer clear of a very tough school bully, is a reminder that books with characters living in non-white, non-suburban communities have the same universal appeal as the books we're probably more used to seeing.  Yaqui  is great for all teenagers, especially those who have dealt with bullying. -  Len Vlahos, Incoming Owner
