Summer campers take an overnight trip

For the first time, Sixteenth Street's Department of Environmental Health summer campers took their experience overnight. Campers got a one-of-a kind experience to learn outdoor skills, such as setting up a tent and cooking outside, and to connect with nature in a new and fun way. Nearly all of the kids were new to camping and had never been on an overnight trip. It was a special outdoor experience of connecting with other campers, trying new things and learning about the environment while being immersed in it.
Back to school - with new backpacks and supplies

The week before school, kids came into the clinic and left smiling, hands full with a backpack and school supplies - thanks to the Sixteenth Street call center and Second Saturday; Christ Child Society. Sixteenth Street's call center organized an internal drive, with hundreds of staff members participating, donating enough goods to put together over 90 back-to-school kits. Second Saturday also contributed, dropping off more than 50 back packs and kits, as they do year after year. A huge thank you to our call center, all the staff that donated and to Second Saturday for supporting Sixteenth Street kids as they head back to school.
Sixteenth Street patient, Ever, featured in United Way Campaign
Ever Gonzalez, a Sixteenth Street social services patient, shared his story with the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County to both celebrate his achievements and help shed light on the importance of the programs funded through the Health Improvement Fund, a collaboration between the United Way and the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership. This fund supports community health centers like Sixteenth Street that ensure patient's medical, mental health and social needs are addressed. Despite a difficult past and with a strong resilience, the help Ever received from the social services department, behavioral health department and medical team at Sixteenth Street changed his life for years to come. Sixteenth Street dental hygienist seeing nearly 30 children per day

Sixteenth Street's recently added dental hygienist, Patti DeQuardo, has had a strong start, seeing more than 30 children per day - just at our Parkway Clinic. As a new addition to the team, Patti currently focuses on seeing children, but intends on extending the services to adults as soon as we are able to accommodate that capacity. It is clear there is a great need for dental care in the Sixteenth Street community and we are excited to be able to take a bulk of that preventative care under our roof.
HPV = Cancer Prevention

If there were a vaccine against cancer, wouldn't you get it for your kids? In the United States each year, HPV causes 39,800 cancers in men and women. The good news is we have a safe and effective way to prevent those cases. Most of the HPV infections that cause these cancers can be prevented with vaccination!

Everyone should be vaccinated to protect against HPV starting at 9 years. Just like any other vaccine, the HPV vaccine can only protect if it is given well before they come in contact with the infection. Studies have also shown that the body's immune response is stronger when HPV vaccine is given at the youngest recommended age. Nearly 90 million doses of HPV vaccine have been given to date in the U.S., and vaccine studies continue to show that HPV vaccines are safe and effective.

If your teen hasn't started or finished the HPV vaccine series yet, it's not too late! Now is a good time to ask your health care provider about vaccines for preteens and teens. Call 672-1353 with any questions or to make an appointment for your child today.
