From our hearts to yours

In February, we focus on our sweethearts with beautiful Valentines, decadent chocolates, bouquets of flowers and maybe even something sparkly from the Jeweler!
But this month shares another focus on the heart ... and that is the health and wellness of our one and only ticker. It's American Heart Month!
Many of us find it easy to ignore or put off the attention we should give to our personal health issues. This procrastination often leads to pain and suffering for those we love most.
According to the CDC, one in four people in the U.S. dies of heart disease, the leading cause of death in both men and women. That's staggering.
It's not difficult to make simple changes that can improve and strengthen the heart in a relatively short period of time. Make simple dietary changes, add in a daily walk, or get out of that chair more often and find one activity you enjoy and then ... do it! If a big change is overwhelming, take small steps and make one improvement every six weeks. By the end of the year, you will have made eight big changes!
This Valentine's Day give your loved ones the gift of a healthier you for 2019. And if you need a support system, the TSS team is making a commitment to Walk Across America and we'd love to have you join us! We'll be tracking our steps from Juneau, Alaska to Washington D.C. while sharing our favorite heart-healthy recipes, activities and celebrations of our progress.
Don't forget to give your workplace the life-saving gift of First Aid and CPR training and check out our AED special for Heart Health Month.
Above all, love yourself, love the special people in your life and create goodness in the world every single day.

Join the TSS team as we exercise  our strongest muscle

TSS recently launched its inaugural Walk Across America challenge. Our team's mission is to walk the equivalent number of miles that it would take to get from TSS's home state capital of Juneau to Washington, D.C. In other words: capital to capital; coast to coast. That's a total of 3,358 miles!

SAFETY CORNER: Cold weather AED Care

During the coldest days of winter, a question that we often get from TSS clients is: "Do we need to do anything special to care for our Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when it's freezing out?"
The last thing employers or individuals want - no matter the weather conditions - is for their AED to malfunction in an emergency situation. Protecting AEDs from extreme temperatures is certainly one way to ensure that your device works when you need it.

QUESTION:
Can the employer act as a Designated Employer Representative (DER), or must another employee be appointed for this role?

ANSWER:
  • The employer (e.g., the owner of a small business) may act personally as the DER.
  • The employer may also appoint an employee or employees to serve in this role.
  • The DER must exercise his or her authority to remove an employee from safety-sensitive functions either directly or by causing the employee to be removed from performing these functions (e.g., by having the employee's supervisor effect the actual removal).
  • The employer may not delegate the DER role to a service agent. Only the employer or an actual employee of the business may perform this function.
  • The Department of Transportation will not authorize a "DER-for-hire" concept (e.g., a person under contract by several companies to serve as their DER).

TSS, Inc staff work closely with the person in the DER role in the businesses we serve. Our goal is to ensure that their programs are running correctly. We are here to field questions, provide training and make sure your company is in compliance with the DOT, whether you are a single operator business or a large company. Contact info@tss-safety.com to find out more about how we can help you.
