What are Federal Opportunity Zones?
According to the
PA Department of Community & Economic Development website, the federal tax bill passed at the end of December 2017 enables the governor to designate certain census tracts as Opportunity Zones. Investments made by individuals through special funds in these zones would be allowed to defer or eliminate federal taxes on capital gains.
How many are in Berks County?
There are a total of six Federal Opportunity Zones in Berks County covering all of West Reading and a large portion of the City of Reading. According to the
PA Federal Opportunity Zones Esri map, these zones are numbers 112, 25, 1, 13, 9 and 4.
