Like Clockwork
My father collected antique timepieces. He had several mantel clocks and an oak Regulator (a school-house wall clock). A number of pocket watches were part of the collection. Lovingly, he cared for them. My siblings and I brought him feathers we found; he used the best of them to clean and lubricate the inner workings of his collection, claiming that a feather was the only tool delicate enough for the job. Each of the gears and wheels and springs that made up the mechanism were needed; if one was lost or out-of-balance or sticky, then proper time was not kept, or the piece stopped working altogether.

Grant Information and Awards

Six Local Nonprofits Granted Nearly Half a Million Dollars
Community Foundation of the Lowcountry recently completed its second of three annual competitive grant cycles and awarded $498,023 to six local organizations.
The grants were awarded to the following organizations.
- Beaufort County Animal Shelter Support Fund received $86,048 for a radiology lab to enable the county to provide x-ray, ultrasound and other necessary diagnostic services at the new county animal campus on Highway 170. This service was previously not available.
- Bluffton Community Center Foundation received $67,000 to support the construction of a shade/picnic pavilion with restrooms and storage next to the new playground at the Field of Dreams Park in Bluffton.
- Bluffton-Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine received $94,420 over two years to support capacity building through staff and technology.
- Heritage Library Foundation received $60,000 over three years to help fund its first ever paid executive director.
- Hilton Head Recreation Association received $100,000 as a challenge "matching" grant and "last dollar in" to fund a state-of-the-art inclusive playground that will serve people of all ages, including both able-bodied and those with disabilities.
- Hopeful Horizons received a three-year grant totaling $90,555 to fund a Grant Manager and Program Evaluation Director position.

The Foundation Directory Online (FDO) is now available for free at the Beaufort and Bluffton branches of the
Beaufort County Library. What is FDO? It's the largest and most comprehensive directory of foundations and grantmaking, with information on more than 140,000 grantmakers. The database includes filters and assessment tools to aid in your search for grants funding. Contact the Beaufort or Bluffton library branches for more information.
Opportunity Grants Available
Opportunity Grants are available throughout the Community Foundation's service area, which includes Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties. Opportunity Grants are designed to stimulate and help launch new programs and projects; or to help focus, enhance, and/or expand an organization's existing programs and services; or as an investment in a capital project which is a critical enhancement to the mission of the nonprofit organization. These grants support requests up to $10,000 and are considered on an ongoing basis throughout the year. The first step to apply is to attend a Grants Information Session. See below for information and remaining session dates for 2018.

The first step to apply for a grant from the Community Foundation is to attend a Grants Information Session where you can learn about our grantmaking guidelines and eligibility requirements.
There are two sessions before the next application deadline on January 15, 2019. They are:
- September 20th
- November 15th

What Do You Think About Our Grantmaking?
GrantAdvisor is a new website that crowdsources grantmaker information to help nonprofits looking for funding. If you submitted a grant request to the Community Foundation in the past several years, we encourage you to complete a survey about your experience. Your feedback will not only help other organizations seeking funding, but can help inform our work and improve our practices.

We encourage organizations to take a few moments to review your own profile from the user/donor perspective. Without logging in, search from the list and you can see how your profile looks to system users. In addition to local donors who may be performing due diligence, we have a growing list of grantmaking groups who use this platform as part of their due diligence process. Those who use The Giving Marketplace to supplement their grant application process expect to see complete information. At a minimum, double check your board member list, South Carolina Secretary of State Registration expiration date, Director and Officer Insurance policy expiration date, financial information. Make sure that you have current information, and then share that information with your constituents.
If your organization is not yet on The Giving Marketplace, contact Debbie Cahoon for an overview and assistance to get started. An up-to-date Marketplace profile is required in order to apply for a grant from the Community Foundation.

Lowcountry Volunteer Connections
|
|
Lowcountry Volunteer Connections is a great resource for you to find and recruit new volunteers. When you list the causes that relate to your mission, volunteers who have a preference for those causes will receive notification of your needs! It's a great way to get your volunteer opportunities to those who would most like to work with you.
If your organization expects to have disaster related needs --- including the need for new volunteers to help when veteran volunteers have been evacuated --- now is a good time to get up to date. We have a wonderful community that is eager to help when needed.

What is "New Power?"
Society is changing rapidly and many of these changes are driven by new technology. How do shifting power dynamics and technology impact our nonprofit sector? Henry Timms, New York City's 92nd Street Y's president and founder of Giving Tuesday recently released a book on the subject entitled "New Power."
He says: "The goal with new power is not to hoard it but to channel it. New power focuses on collaboration and participation and transparency. Its methods include crowdsourcing, social media campaigns and decentralization."
We find his ideas very intriguing and think you will, too. To learn more, watch this TED Talk by "New Power" co-author, Jeremy Heimans and let us know what you think.
Lowcountry Professional Associations Help Build Your Organization's --- and Staff's --- Capacity
Southern Lowcountry AFP
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is the professional association of individuals and organizations that generate philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable institutions. Community Foundation recently helped establish a sub-chapter of AFP South Carolina Lowcountry called Southern Lowcountry AFP. Programming is expected to begin in October. SoLo-SCAVA
Most organizations in the Lowcountry rely on volunteers to achieve their mission and yet most nonprofit staff who manage volunteers are not connected to resources that can help them recruit, retain and recognize volunteers.
SoLo-SCAVA, the Southern Lowcountry South Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration, is a local professional association for volunteer administrators in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties. Membership is $35 per year and entitles you to four professional development sessions and discounts on registration for Together SC's Summit and SCAVA's annual statewide conference. There are also social/networking opportunities throughout the year.
The next program meeting is October 18th and a holiday social event is planned for December. All program dates are Thursdays from 8:30-10:00 a.m. at the Palmetto Electric facilities in Hardeeville. Attendance at your first session is FREE.
