The historic town of
Allensworth
is designated as California Historical Landmark No. 1047. In 1908, Colonel Allen Allensworth, his wife Josephine Leavell Allensworth, and a group of dedicated African American pioneers established the town in the farmlands of Tulare County. Allensworth was the only town in California founded, built, and governed by African Americans, and represented a people's determination to claim the full rights of citizenship. Today, many of the town's original and reconstructed buildings are preserved and open to the public as part of
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park
