On Sunday, January 27, 143 event participants and many other donors made the 5th Annual Ski for Parkinson's in Steamboat Springs a success. Haymaker Nordic Center provided a perfect backdrop, an excellent track to ski and snowshoe and provided a delicious lunch to enjoy while entertained by live music.

This event is dedicated to the memory of Bill Root. Five years ago Bill gathered his family and friends in the Yampa Valley Parkinson Support Network (YVPSN) to quickly pull together the inaugural Ski for Parkinson's event. Bill was also a leader in forming the YVPSN and the Parkinson's Nordic Instructional Program. Bill's kindness and humor are sorely missed - but his passion continues to live on through this event!

Because of the support and help from all of you, YVPSN has already raised over $26,500 to provide programs and services, free of charge to those in the Yampa Valley through this event.

Missed the event, but still want to contribute?

We are deeply grateful to all the sponsors, those who contributed prizes for the incredible drawing packages and all the volunteers who made this event run so smoothly.

A special thanks to our Gold Medal Sponsor

Board Member Spotlight
James Lerner

"I joined the Board because I've watched my uncle live with Parkinson's for more than 15 years and have seen the impact that organizations like PAR can have on both the individual and their family.

As my uncle lives in New Zealand, I'm unable to be there to support him and his family in person, but joining the PAR Board allows me to help make a difference for others like him here in Colorado.

I hope to bring different perspectives to the table, having been involved in various philanthropic and social impact investment initiatives over the past 10 years throughout Australia, New Zealand and the US. I'm also hoping to be able to help on the finance side to ensure PAR is making the most out the capital it receives, while also working with the other Board members and the PAR staff on new fund raising initiatives. "

Parkinson's disease is commonly thought of as a disease of the elderly but about 5-10% of patients will begin having symptoms under the age of 50; this group is commonly referred to as having Young-Onset Parkinson's disease. The Parkinson Association of the Rockies wants to gain a better understanding of our young-onset community in Colorado by starting a  young-onset focus group.

The first group will take place on Friday, February 8 at 1:00pm. If you'd like to be included, please email  Jodi Brown or call (303) 830-1839.

Things I Wish I Knew Project

Our evening  Cherry Hills Village Support Group is emba rking on a project with the Parkinson Association, and we'd like to enlist your participation! We want you to share with others the  things you wish you knew when you were diagnosed.

We often hear that much of the best information we've learned along the Parkinson's journey is from fellow travelers on the path. Unfortunately, the information often gets to us later than it might have been useful.  So, we are attempting to gather, compile and share our collective wisdom up front so it is available as soon as possible.

Will you help? If so, please share and click here to share your insight!

Assessing a High Intensity Balance Program in People with Parkinson's
Marcia Smith is putting together a balance study research project to assess the effects of a high intensity balance program on balance in people with Parkinson's who are over 50 years old.  The study hopes to assess whether this intervention makes a difference in a person's balance while standing or walking, if it affects their fear of falling or ability to do tasks they find difficult because of balance, and if there are any changes in their quality of life. For more information or to participate in the study please contact (303) 478-2523 or email Dr. Marcia Smith.
