Emails have vastly take over our work environments. Whether it is the best form of communication is up for debate. Some documents are best sent via email. Sometimes we just want to document what we have to say. Here are some tips on making your emails as effective as they can be so that they are read and your message is heard.
   Better Email Tips

  • Use a strong and precise subject line. You want your reader to know what they are about to read. Too often an email chain begins and the subject line doesn't change which means that it is hard to find earlier emails.
  • If you are in the midst of an email chain, make sure you have thoroughly read through earlier emails so you are responding to the most current one.
  • Emails need to be short and concise.Between 2014 and 2018 the average office worker received about 90 emails a day if not more. People don't have time to read long emails. Keep it to a couple of paragraphs. Need more room? Write a document and attach it to your email
  • Make sure you know the purpose of the email. Is it to inform? Make a request? Or simply an FYI.
  • Watch your tone. Polite and clear is key. Don't write an email when you are angry. You'll regret it later. Your email lacks body language and tone which we rely on so heavily to interpret meaning.
  • Sending an email overseas or writing to someone whose first language isn't English? Ensure that you are clear and using standard written English to avoid miscommunication.
  • Read and reread your email before sending. If it is really important, print it out so you can check for typos. It is very hard to see our mistakes online.
