President's Message - Matthew Page, CRPS®, CFP®, CAP®
Matthew Page
Now that we are officially enjoying the summer months, it's important to remember to enjoy these long days. The long winter nights will be here all too soon. June marked the halfway point of my tenure as President. I have truly enjoyed serving as the FPA of Northern California President. Prior to me joining the board, I was more of a receiver than a giver in the FPA community. I received networking opportunities, ongoing professional education and a community of like-minded people to learn from. All three of these gifts have been important at different times during my career. For instance, I landed at my current firm because of a connection I made at the FPA NorCal conference over 10 years ago. Shout out to Caleb Brown at New Planner Recruiting. Also, there have been FPA meetings where a speaker addressed an issue that a client would later ask for my recommendation on. However, the most important benefit has been the community. I have received more from my fellow FPA members than I could ever hope to give back. The advice and friendship from other members in a profession that can sometimes feel lonely has been important for sanity and clarity. As an independent practitioner, it's invaluable to be able to discuss our businesses with others that are in the trenches with us. Continue reading here

Past President - Jenny Hood, CFP®
I have always been interested in behavioral finance. We humans are a fascinating species. We like to think that we act rationally, but once you delve even just a little into behavioral finance (or any psychology for that matter) you begin to see that we are not as rational and logical as we like to think. Or, to use a term I recently hear at the FPA Retreat conference, we act irrationally rational. I recently came across a podcast that interviewed Dr. Brad Klontz and really enjoyed it because instead of just discussing behavioral finance, he offered up some tips and techniques we can begin to use; not only in client meetings, but in all of our interactions. If you are curious, you can download the podcast here. Or find it on iTunes by searching for, Between Now and Success - The Money Stories That Could be Hurting Your Clients.

President-Elect - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
I hope your Summer is off to a great start. It's hard to believe we only have 5 months left in the year, but this is also a time to reflect on what we have accomplished or learned in the first half of 2018.

You never know where you'll find your next great idea. There are many opportunities for learning such as:
  • Talking to a colleague at a monthly meeting or quarterly mixer
  • Free monthly webinars put on by FPA - some of them even offer CE
  • Podcasts such as Michael Kitces #FA Success and Hannah Moore's You're a Financial Planner... Now What? Here's the link to #YAFPNW, but it's also available on iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts. http://fpaactivate.org/yafpnw/
  • Speaking of podcasts, our very own Alexandria Cole was interviewed by Hannah in episode #101.
  • Local Study Groups. You can start your own or, as an FPA member, join our chapter quarterly as we meet to discuss various topics.

Strategic Partners - Launi Cooper, CRMP
In creating our Platinum level of Strategic Partner, our hope was to provide an opportunity for our Strategic Partners to bring in a high quality speaker that would add value to both our members and help promote the value of our Strategic Partners connections in our industry. And, as our 2018 Platinum Strategic Partner, I think you'll see that in our December meeting! I'm so excited to announce that we will have the opportunity to meet and hear from author, Jamie Hopkins in December 2018!

Our meeting is on Friday, December 7th from 11 am-1 pm, and will include lunch. Seating will be very limited and available to our members and Strategic Partners first and will open to non-members shortly before the event, if we are not sold out. More details with the location (Roseville), and pricing will follow. Make sure to register as soon as you see it open!  Read Jamie's Bio

Programs Corner - Jessy Gilger, CFP®
We are more than half way through the year and so far, our monthly meetings have covered many different topics including taxes, estate planning, practice management, the current state of pensions and the different types of business entities. We have some exciting stuff coming for the remainder of 2018 as well:

July's meeting focused on working with millennials.  Russell Kroeger, who was recently named one of InvestmentNews' 40 Under 40, provided a framework for working with millennial clients and also gave us an opportunity to practice implementing the framework with a brief case study.

The August meeting will focus on the topic, Thinking Forward Under TCJA with Ed Cotney, Founder and Principal, Olympus Tax, Business and Insurance Solutions, Inc. and Author of Tax Secrets Made Simple.

September's meeting will be on artificial intelligence (AI) and how it may disrupt asset and wealth management. AI is developing fast and finding its way into numerous parts of our lives. Join us in September to see how it will affect and change financial planning. Read more

I hope you are having a wonderful start to your summer so far! It is sure lining up to be an active one for me and my family.

Status of 2018 Financial Planning Day
Many of you enjoy participating in our annual Sacramento Financial Planning Day event. We know that providing pro bono financial planning is important to many of our members, and believe that it is a foundational piece of creating a strong profession.
However, due to declining participation over the last couple years, and the significant level of effort and coordination required to hold this event, we are evaluating our options for this year's event.

As of right now, we have not yet scheduled a date or location to hold the 2018 Sacramento Financial Planning Day event. Continue reading here
