Lyttonsville Place Bridge Opens

Purple Line Transit Partners (PLTP) opened the new Lyttonsville Place Bridge last week, to the joy and relief of many GSSCC members.  For now, the new bridge can accommodate one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction and provides an area for pedestrian crossing. In the coming months, crews will work to complete the remainder bridge, including sidewalks, drop-off lanes, and access to the future Lyttonsville Station and Capital Crescent Trail.

Drivers should expect temporary lane closures  between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  over the next two weeks as crews mark pavement on Brookville Road near the bridge.

As a result of efforts by the Chamber, former County Executive Ike Leggett directed the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) to open connection at Stewart Avenue to accommodate traffic while the Lyttonsville Place Bridge was closed. That connection has now been closed.

WAYNE AVENUE ALERT - PLTP has announced that temporary lane closures will occur over the next two weeks on an as needed basis on Wayne Avenue, between Dale Drive and Sligo Creek Parkway for truck deliveries to Silver Spring International Middle School between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Maryland General Assembly Now in Session

State Senators and Delegates gathered last Wednesday to kick off this year's 90-day session of the Maryland General Assembly. Montgomery County has the largest delegation in the State with eight districts (24 Delegates and 8 Senators). Of the 24 Delegates from Montgomery County, ten are new.

In anticipation of the session, GSSCC President Jane Redicker, along with representatives of other chambers in Montgomery County, met with State Delegate Marc Korman, chair of the Montgomery County delegation, to get an idea of the issues that might be addressed this session. Among those we will be following are:  increasing the state minimum wage to $15 per hour (compatibility with Montgomery County's wage will be a priority for GSSCC); expanding the state sick and safe leave law (proposals thus far would make it more like the one we have in Montgomery County); discussions on legalizing recreational marijuana use and sports betting (both in an effort to raise revenues); education funding, particularly expanding Pre-K (a promise made by many legislators during their campaigns.

GSSCC will be following these issues and more and advocating on behalf of business interests. Click here to see a list of state priorities we will be sharing with legislators.
