Olympic-sized Celebration!
|
|
It was a full house for our
All-School European Continent Study Celebrations on Thursday. Visitors to all three of our program levels were treated to student-produced projects, food samples, dress, dance, music and even a symbolic Olympics event! We were thrilled to be able to share all of this with so many of you and we thank you so much for spending part of our Thursday with us!
 So, what was this continent study all about anyway, and why is it so important? Firstly, this element of our
Montessori Cultural C
urriculum provides the children with an opportunity to explore the larger world. It exposes them to aspects of cultures from around the world, as they learn about the people, terrain and animals of each
continent, all with a focus on basic human needs. Each year, our students study two different continents...next up this year is Australia.
And beyond that, this week's celebration offers our students the opportunity to strengthen their communication skills. They're able to find their speaking and writing voices and to learn how to share what they've learned with others.
As you might imagine, this kind of a school-wide project takes great energy and focus and requires that all the resources in the building pull together! Each classroom worked carefully on their chosen projects with assists as needed from our interventionists, our library and technology specialists, our special educators and even Ms. Laura W. enjoyed the time she and the Upper Elementary Students spent making fresh humus which was served to visitors during the Upper Elementary Olympics. It is a pleasure to support the students as they explore the world in this way, and observe them discover their place in it. And it is always wonderful to share that process with all of you!

Earlier this week, the Union Leader announced their
40 Under Forty Class of 2019. We are thrilled to report that there are three
recipients who are part of our Mill Falls Community. The include:
Matt Wilhelm
, MFCS dad of Ben in Yosemite, husband of Ms. Jody our Librarian, and newly elected NH State Rep for Manchester;
Talesha
Saint-Marc
, our school's lawyer;
Kelley Muir, who works in the tech industry and has led the original design and the redesign of our school's website as part of her non-profit's Float Left Labs work;
Erika Connors,
sister-in-law of our Board Trustee Jill Connors and
NH State Rep for Manchester; Marlana Trombley, professor and dance instructor and uber volunteer, is also the wife of our newest Trustee, Jeff Trombley;
and NH Senator Dan Feltes who was or Lottery Official for the 2017 Lottery and who has been a champion for public education especially full-day kinder. As we always say, it takes a village to start and sustain a NH charter school and we are so very fortunate to have such talent among those who support our work and share their talent and wisdom with us. Congrats to all!

Ms. Roxanne's final day with us at Mill Falls. She has been a steady and calm presence in our front office, full of grace and kindness. W
e will miss her smile and laughter, but of course we wish her our very best as she sets off on her new adventure. She has done a great job in preparing Jen to take over the reigns; Jen will begin full-time at the front desk on Monday. Please join us in sending this message to Roxanne...

Student Health Reminder
|
|
A reminder that we are working hard to keep everyone at school healthy and productive. This takes cooperation from all members of our school community.
If your child has a fever, is vomiting or experiencing other symptoms that are contagious and/or will impact his/her ability to attend to school work, please keep your child home.
A reminder of the guidelines that appear in our Family Handbook along with our thanks for carefully following the guidelines:
Please DO NOT send your child to school if he/she has:
- Fever of 100.3 or greater (Temperature should be normal for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Often temperatures are lower in the morning but rise in the afternoon.)
- Vomiting within the past 24 hours
- Diarrhea within the past 8 hours
- Rash not previously diagnosed by your child's doctor and determined not to be contagious
- Severe cold or cough
- Conjunctivitis with drainage from the eye
- Child may return after 24 hrs. of antibiotic treatment
- Impetigo
- May return after 24 hrs. of antibiotics
- Strep throat
- May return after 24 hrs. of antibiotics
- Any acute illness that does not allow them to fully participate in school activities.

After School Club News
|

Join Ms. Colleen C. for the launch of our Board Game Club. Each week, Ms. Colleen will introduce a classic board game or card game. Club members will enjoy time playing the games and expanding their knowledge base. This club is for Upper Elementary students (4-6 year students) and will meet Thursdays from 3-4pm for 6 sessions.

Girls on the Run Club is stepping off. This 10-week program is for our 3rd, 4th and 5th year girls and is designed for all levels of fitness. Practice times will be Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-4:30 beginning March 18th. The club will also attend the annual 5K Celebration on June 8th. Any questions? Fresh
Fruit & Veggies Needed

 The MFCS Food Pantry provides food and other items to school families experiencing food insecurity.
Ms. Susanne, who manages our
MFCS Food Pantry,
would like to be able to send
fresh fruit and veggies
home with our students on a regular basis.
These days,
fresh produce is nearly impossible to find at the NH Food Bank (our Pantry-partner). So we are hoping that members of our MFCS Community can help by donating fresh items to be included in the packages we send home each week to our
Pantry Participants.
We thank the many donors to the Pantry for their ongoing kindness and generosity, and look forward to sharing even more variety with our recipients.

February Fun Vacation Camp

February Fun Vacation Camp is a special opportunity for children to learn about nature in winter. Join us for a single day, several days, or the whole week. Each day will include outdoor excursions, games, crafts, stories, live animals, songs, and conservation projects to help participants discover the wonders of the season. Children should bring their own lunches and snacks and be prepared to be outside with appropriate clothing. Registration is now open for February camp!

for a week of art-making fun & imagination!
Our week-long February Vacation Art Camps are a super fun, inspiring experience. Create artworks in a variety of media. Take a rousing tour of the Currier and participate in your own creation of Surroundings: A Community Mural in the Galleries! Pack your snack and lunch, and dress warmly for outdoor recess (weather permitting). Morning or afternoon
sessions are $170 each; enroll for a full-day session for just $285. After-camp care is
available for the afternoon session and full day for an additional $30. All supplies included!

And then it was time for the first ever
MFCS Olympic Games!
Our guests were served some carrots, pretzels to go with the fresh, student-made humus, as they waited for the games to begin.
Our Student Masters of Ceremony kicked off the events which included a series indoors (and safe) events: the "discus" throw, a "javelin" toss, a run (in this case, it was an high-knees competition) and a long jump. Teams and guests cheered on the competitors.
