November Holiday Hours  
Closed Monday, November 12th, Veterans Day
The Tiverton Public Library will reopen Tuesday, November 13th at 1:00pm.
 
Thanksgiving Holiday
The Tiverton Public Library will close at 3pm on Wednesday, November 21st, and will be closed Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd, and also Friday, November 23rd.  The library will reopen on Saturday, November 24th at 10:00am.

New!  Day of the Dead Events at the Library!
On Saturday, November 3rd, the Tiverton Public Library invites you to celebrate your loved ones who have passed and learn about the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead. Day of the Dead is a festival in which we welcome the souls of the dead to return and enjoy the pleasures they enjoyed in life. It is a celebration of honoring and remembering those we love who have passed on. 
An array of craft activities for all ages will be available from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm throughout the library, with two presentations geared towards adults throughout this time (details below), and the movie Coco will show at 1:00pm in the Community Room. 
Bring an item of memorabilia to place on the community ofrenda, or altar, to honor and remember your loved ones. Items could be a picture, a favorite item, or anything that makes you think of the person (or animal!). Please no valuable items, as the library cannot guarantee return of the items.
ADULT EVENTS
Food for Fines-- Nov 1 - 16
The library will be accepting non-expired, non-perishable items for families in need towards fine forgiveness. Each item will be used towards $1 of overdue fines. Bring items and your library card to the library between November 1st and November 16th to participate in this event. All donations will be given to the Amicable Church Thanksgiving Basket Drive to be held on Saturday, November 17th at the library. Support local families in need and get your fines forgiven.

Archival Presentation
Saturday,November 3,11:00am,Community Room
Join Technology Librarian Patrick Elliot, who will discuss how to scan photos into high resolution digital copies to your computer.  You are invited to bring up to 5 photos you wish to create copies of in a hands-on how-to.  Please also bring a USB to keep the files on.

Special Presentation by Marjory O'Toole,
Executive Director, Little Compton Historical Society
Saturday, November 3, 12:00noon, Community Room
Learn about the many historical grave sites in Little Compton and Tiverton, and how to clean and maintain the gravestones.  Individuals interested in assisting Marjory in the effort to restore historic gravestones in the area will have the opportunity to learn more about how to get involved.

All ages welcome to wind down the Day of the Dead events by enjoying this movie.  Popcorn provided; others snacks welcome.

An award-winning adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic Kids, and The Providence Journal, Peter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa.

A Community Clothing Swap
Do you have children's clothes that your kids just don't fit into any more? Are you looking for new-to-you clothes that will fit your growing child without breaking the bank? Join our community clothing swap at the Tiverton Public Library!
Bring clothes for children aged 0-12 to the library on Saturday, Nov. 24th to give them to a new home. After items have been sorted, attendees will have a chance to take any items that fit their needs at no cost to them! Please only bring items that are clean, washed, folded and organized in reusable bags/boxes.
Doors open at 10:30am for clothes drop-off and sorting. Shopping will begin at 11:00am.

Meditation for a Stress Free Holiday Season
Join Dr. Alan Post, long time meditator as he discusses the extraordinary effect of meditation. It can reduce stress-related responses, improve concentration, enhance clarity of thought and mental equilibrium. He will also present a simple, yet powerful meditation technique that can enrich one's life personally, professionally, spiritually and help with seasonal stress.

Cracking the Boy Code with Adam Cox
For 25 years Dr. Cox has been coaching families and schools on communication strategies that work with boys. This program will include proven techniques that anyone can learn and apply. Find out what "good communication" means. Learn how your tone is more important than your words - and how to establish a constructive tone. Learn how boys want to feel about themselves, and how your communication might be undermining that goal!

Thanksgiving Baskets for Families in Need 
The library and Amicable Church will be partnering again to distribute Thanksgiving baskets to local families in need. Basket pick up will be held on Saturday November 17th, from 9am - 3pm. Families and individuals who are finding it difficult to provide a Thanksgiving meal this year may contact the library to be added to the list of recipients. TEEN EVENTS 
- Day of the Dead Cultural Event
Saturday, November 3rd 11am - 1pm Throughout the Library
A library wide celebration of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Learn about  this meaningful holiday through crafts, activities, and more. Activities available:  coloring, making paper Cempasuchil (marigolds), interacting with our Ofrenda to celebrate family members who have passed, discussion of archiving photos, and a bi-lingual storytime (presenter pending)!
 
- Action Packed Movies at the Library
Saturday, November 3rd starting at 1pm in the Community Room
Bring your lunch and join us for a dine-in showing of CoCo projected on the big screen in our Community  Room.  Free popcorn and candy provided!  Our Teen Movie showings are part of our Teen  Program  offerings but are open to all.

FIRST TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH  
Tuesday, November 6th 6-7pm in the Teen Room
Come hang out and discuss titles that you are reading, what you would like to see  happen at the library, and eat some snacks!   Earn a community service hour for  attending! Attendance is limited to patrons in Grades 6 through 12.

Bring whatever you're reading (have read) and discuss it (even better if you didn't like it!) with other readers.  Snacks provided!   Participation is limited to patrons in Grades 6 through 12.

- Young Adult for Adults Book Club
SECOND TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH
Tuesday, November 13th, 6-7:30pm in the Learning Center
Interested in a traditional book club?  Want to talk about books?  This is a traditional book club that meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month (due to scheduling, meeting date may occasionally be the third Tuesday of the month) .  It is a book group is intended for "older" teens and adults.  This month's book selection is The Love Letters of Abelard and Lily by Laura Creedle.  Copies are available for check out at the library.  Teens must be at least in high school to attend this book group.

- Anime & Manga Group
THIRD FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH
Friday, November 16th, 3:30-4:30pm in the Teen Room
Monthly Anime & Manga meet up is starting up again!  Join other interested teens in lively  discussion, anime viewing, craft making, and snack eating!   Also, help us with our long- term goal of planning a cosplay event! Attendance is limited to patrons in Grades 6  through 12.

- Write RI: Short Story Workshop
Saturday, November 17th 11:30am-1pm in the Learning Center
Celebrate Writing in November! You may not be interested in NaNoWriMo, but how about a short story? A writing coach from WriteRI will be here to work with students on their own writing pieces. School One and Goat Hill are pleased to announce the 2018
Write Rhode Island Competition with the aim to engage students in grades 7-12 in creative writing. Eligible entries should be a short work of fiction incorporating Rhode Island as a theme.  The coach will be here on 11/17 to work with students on pieces they may wish to submit for the contest.  Bring your work with you or bring questions about an idea that you have to run by the coach!  **This program requires registration.  Please contact the library to sign up or sign up through the library's calendar. **
 
- Paracord Bracelets for Operation Gratitude 
(Community Service Hour Opportunity)

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 3-5pm Thursday 4-6pm in the Teen Room
November is Warrior Care Month and includes the holiday Veteran's Day mean to celebrate those who have served our country.  Last year during Warrior Care Month, the Tiverton Teen Department made 50 quick-release paracord bracelets to send to a warrior in active duty.  Join us to make these bracelets for members of our armed services and earn an hour of service for every 3 bracelets that you make . All materials to make the bracelets will be provided. All bracelets will be donated to Operation Gratitude. Students will be asked not to take bracelets home.
  
- November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)
All Month in the Teen Room
Writing Prompts or varying length and complexity will be available all month in the Teen Room to celebrate writing in all its formats for NaNoWriMo.   Share your writing prompt with us by dropping it in our submission mailbox (on the display in Teen Room), on Instagram by tagging @tivertonteenroom or by submitting a photo to [email protected] to potentially win a prize!

RETRO GAME CLUB
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH
6PM, LEARNING CENTER 

In celebration of International Games Week -- an initiative of the American Libraries Association to "reconnect communities through their  libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games" -- the Tiverton Library welcomes all ages to join us for the first meeting of our Retro Game Club. Tuesday, November 6th, 6pm in the Learning Center.
 
Do you love gaming? Want to play and learn about the groundbreaking games that started it all? Then this is an event for you!
 
Join our Technology Librarian, Patrick, for a look into the past generations of video games. We'll have original Sega and Nintendo hardware from the 80s & 90s, as well as some newer editions to play. There will be several stations set up in a round-robin style, allowing you to hop from one activity to the next and try your hand at variety of classic games.
 
Afterward, be sure to browse our wide selection of Xbox and PlayStation games available to borrow, as well as our collection of board and tabletop games patrons can enjoy inside the library. Game on!

Children's Events for November 
    
 "Read to Cash the pet therapy dog" program returns to the Children's Library on the following Tuesdays through December:  October 30, November 27, and December 18.
All programs begin at 3:30 and registration is required to secure a 15 minute session.  Call 625-6796, ext. 3 to reserve a session with Cash.

Children are invited to get cozy with Cash, a gentle dog companion, and read a book to him.

What: Join Little Library Bunny and Miss Meg for nursery rhymes, songs, finger plays and stories while introducing your baby to the wonders of language.
Stories and activities have been chosen for non-walking infants.
Limit: 16 babies per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.
The next meeting of the Friends of Tiverton Libraries will be on Wednesday, November 14th at 7pm in the Trustees Room.  Please note that we have moved the November meeting to the 2nd Wednesday of the month because of the Thanksgiving Holiday.  Please join us!

The Friends will once again sponsor a holiday gift drive to benefit East Bay Community Action.  From Monday November 19th through 3pm on Saturday, December 8th, you may help fill the box in the library lobby with NEW and UNWRAPPED  easy puzzles, board and card games (such as Sorry, Connect4, Candy Land, Trouble, Chutes&Ladders, UNO, Fish), disposable diapers, board books, and new clothing size infant to 6X (onesies, pj's, mittens, hats, socks and boots).  Thank you for helping local families in need.
