The Shutdown Has Ended... For Now
As of this afternoon, the federal government shutdown has come to an end. However, the agreement reached by the White House and Congress is merely a stopgap measure that will fund the federal government for 3 weeks.
Congress and the White House now have until February 15 to negotiate a budget deal, with or without border wall funding.
The
president said the 800,000 federal workers who have gone without pay will receive their back-pay quickly but did not specify exactly when that money would arrive. As such, the impact of the shutdown on furloughed workers and others impacted by the shutdown could last some time.
If you're looking to help those still feeling the impact of the shutdown, consider the following:
- Check-in with your clients who may have been impacted by the shutdown, particularly those you have infrequent contact with
- Reach out to your local food pantry, shelter, or other social service agency to see if they have clients looking for services due to the shut down
- Consider waiving, reducing, or delaying fees for clients who are still in need
We also urge you to continue to contact your Representatives and let them know you oppose funding for the border wall. Moreover, let them know the situation must be resolved in the next three weeks. Another shutdown is simply not acceptable.

NASW Assurance Services Introduces "Social Work: Risky Business" Podcast
This new podcast program is a series of short, informative tips on how to manage malpractice risks. Topics cover social work malpractice issues, best practices, and liability strategies to reduce exposure to malpractice lawsuits. Tune in to learn how to manage and protect your career better.
Episode 1: Documentation Pointers to Avoid Liability and Malpractice "Medical records requests" and "breach of confidentiality" are the leading claims issues for social workers. These claims trigger lawsuits, licensing board inquiries, and HIPAA information breach liability. A malpractice judgment can hurt you personally and professionally. While malpractice insurance claims cases are adjudicated, your file documentation may be the only case evidence that protects you from a lawsuit filed against you.
Episode 2: Avoiding Insurance Coverage Gaps
Keeping on top of your insurance coverages is vital to ensure your assets are protected. In this episode, we provide some tips for healthcare workers to manage risk.

$15 Minimum Wage Passes First Hurdle
Earlier this week, legislation to raise NJ's minimum wage to $15 per hour for most workers by the year 2024 (A15) passed the Assembly
Labor Committee by a 6-3 vote. While this legislation still contains carve outs for certain workers that we would like to see removed, NASW-NJ considers movement on this legislation to be a step in the right direction.
The legislation is next scheduled to be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on January 28.
For an excellent overview on the provisions of A15, see this analysis from New Jersey Policy Perspective.

Know Your Rights: Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
As many of you know, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (i.e. methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone) has been proven to be safe and effective. Evidence demonstrates that MAT increases treatment retention while reducing morbidity and mortality, opioid use, overdoses, and risk behaviors that transmit HIV and hepatitis C.
Despite decades of research and evidence, some drug treatment providers still discriminate against people on MAT which can be deadly and it is against the law. In January 2018, NJ enacted
legislation
to protect individuals who are using MAT from discrimination by drug treatment providers. Please see this new
factsheet
for more information.
If you have or someone you know has been denied other drug treatment services because they are using MAT, please contact the State of NJ at the numbers below:
