It was all about penguins in Teacher Lisa's class at the Early Learning Center when they celebrated "Welcome to Winter Week." Staff read winter themed stories and students participated in penguin activities and crafts.

Edina High School is ranked the No. 1 Best College Prep High School in Minnesota according to the 2019 Niche rankings. The rankings are based on graduation rates, AP enrollment, SAT/ACT scores, and the quality of colleges students consider.

Teaching methods used in an Edina music class will receive national attention thanks to the efforts of Janet Jans, music teacher at South View Middle School. Some of Jans' work has been published in the Oxford Handbook of Assessment Policy and Practice in Music Education Vol. 2.

More than 70 people attended the School Board Legislative Action Committee's Platform Breakfast on Jan. 7, where committee members introduced the 2019 platform and legislators addressed the gathering.

At its annual organizational meeting, the School Board elected the following to serve as board officers for this calendar year:

Edina Community Foundation is seeking a 'Bold New Idea' to serve, strengthen, and celebrate the city
The Edina Community Foundation is looking for a big idea for Edina that addresses an unmet need in the neighborhood, school, or business district. The Edina Community Foundation will make a grant of up to $5,000 to invest in an idea submitted by an Edina resident or group of residents. The incubation funding will give the winner an opportunity to bring the plan to life through the Edina Community Foundation's Community Impact Fund. Applications will be accepted through January 31.

Minnesota Dental Association's 'Give Kids a Smile'
The Minnesota Dental Association and its hundreds of volunteers are hosting an event that provides free dental care to low-income children. The event is scheduled for Feb. 1 and 2 in locations throughout most of the state. A list of clinics is available on the

or by calling United Way 2-1-1 (just dial 2-1-1). Parents can secure Give Kids a Smile appointments for their children now.
