President's Message - Matthew Page, CRPS®, CFP®, CAP®
Matthew Page
As we enter the final quarter of 2018, there is much to be grateful for today and to look forward to in 2019.  When I look around at the people in FPA, I see good-hearted folks that are giving their time to make our industry better.

For my final newsletter as President of FPA of Northern California, I would like to thank our Executive Director, Board Members, Strategic Partners, Allied Professionals and Members for all of their hard work and dedication.  For those that have not served on our board, it may come as a surprise the amount of communication and work that goes on behind the scenes. Not everyone that gets this newsletter will be able to make it to our final meeting in December. Therefore, I will use this platform to recognize many of the individual board members for their efforts.  My first Thank You goes to Jenny Hood (Past President).  Jenny has stepped in with her incredible insight and generous heart whenever she was needed.  We started the year with Anna Martinez as our programs chair, but her new job duties meant she was only able to help for a few months. After Anna stepped back, Jessy Gilger graciously agreed to takeover Programs for the remainder of 2018. Karen Miller will be our 2019 President.  I'm eternally grateful to Karen for accepting the opportunity to be our President.  David Ghiorso has been an excellent Treasurer and has been incredibly helpful at explaining how our finances operate. Our Strategic Partner Chair, Launi Cooper, has renewed our engagement with our sponsors and we have seen year-over-year increases in sponsorship due to her efforts.

Past President - Jenny Hood, CFP®
In mid-October we hosted a Past Presidents' coffee discussion. We started the meeting off with each president sharing what the chapter was like when they were leading it. I enjoyed getting to know what our chapter was like in the past from each perspective of the presidents that were able to attend. After that we focused the discussion on building future leaders. One of the current hot topics of our profession is succession planning. What I am starting to realize is that not only do we need strong succession plans in our offices, we also need them for our profession. We understand and appreciate the institutional knowledge that these past leaders have and therefore, we wanted to know their thoughts. Many different ideas were brought up. However, one theme that I noticed to emerge was, engagement. To continue to develop, grow and shape the future of our profession, we need to find meaningful ways to engage our members, strategic partners, guests and community. I chose to engage by joining the FPANC board. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serving my local community through my service on the board. And for my time, I have received a community that is worth a lot more to me than what I have given. It is very bitter sweet as I join the ranks of our Past Presidents, but look forward to continuing to find meaningful ways to engage our community of professionals. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Past Presidents' discussion and to everyone else who engages our communities in whatever way that they can. I look forward to seeing you around in 2019!

Registration Opens to All After November 7th!

Description:
Americans are facing a retirement crisis. But it's not the crisis that many people think. A good deal of the crisis is being driven by poor planning, behavioral biases, and misconceptions. Leading the charge of under- and poorly-utilized assets is the home. The reality is that housing wealth is single largest asset for America's retirees. However, most financial advisors leave it alone, potentially creating a fiduciary issue. In this presentation, Professor Jamie Hopkins breaks down best practices for utilizing home equity in a retirement income and highlights a number of the common misconceptions that advisors have about tapping into home equity to support a client's retirement. More specifically, the presentation will cover reverse mortgages, lines of credit, downsizing, special purpose loans, mortgage interest deductibility, and coordinated housing withdrawal strategies. Don't ignore you client's largest asset, rewire the way you think about home equity and retirement income.

President-Elect - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
The leaves are changing color, the days are getting shorter and the acorns are falling signaling that autumn is here. It's hard to believe how quickly time passes.

Thank you to all who attended the two Study Groups this year.  The rest of 2018 got away from us, so we won't be scheduling any more this year; however, there are still opportunities to connect with your peers. As of this writing we have two more monthly meetings, with plenty of time before and after each meeting to network, and a possible November mixer for those who prefer to mingle after work.

Another great way to connect with others while learning is to attend a conference, preferably in a cool location. I had the recent pleasure of attending my first Bob Veres Insider Forum at the end of September near San Diego.  For those of you who want to expand your knowledge and listen to people who are at the forefront of our profession - true thought leaders - you have to go! We heard from Harold Evensky, Deena Katz, Joel Bruckenstein, and Wade Pfau and more. The topics this year included technology, investments, operations and practice management, among others. Some of the questions were: how do we run an efficient practice so that we can spend more time helping our clients? What role will technology play in all this, how will the business of financial planning and investment management change going forward, and what do millennials really want? We got the answers to all of the above and more. I only wish that I could have cloned myself so that I could have listened to more presentations.

We are now firmly in the grips of Fall. The weather is cooling. The trees are turning colors. And many of you are starting to plan for your holidays, which is a time when we often become more intentional about helping those less fortunate than we are.  So as you start to get into the holiday spirit, please consider how you can utilize your talents and resources to help those who need your support. Here are a few ideas.

Financial Planning for Cancer Program

I have friends, family and co-workers who have been impacted by the difficult battle with cancer. Fighting cancer is not only physically and emotionally difficult, but it can also have a financially devastating impact on a cancer patient and their family. Just as they are fighting for their lives, they are often fighting creditors. The Foundation for Financial Planning in partnership with the FPA is developing a Financial Planning for Cancer Program.  If you or someone you know has been personally affected by cancer, I would encourage you to visit the website for more information and consider volunteering.
