The end of October is here, the days are getting shorter, and Halloween is fast approaching! We would like to wish everyone a fun, and safe Halloween. Here are some tips to help our wish come true!
Costumes
- Safe costumes are labeled “fire-resistant.” Use reflective tape on your child's costume or bags, and you can't have too many glow sticks. Avoid masks that obstruct vision, but if the latest Marvel “Iron Man” mask is a must, have the children remove it while they walk near the street.
Trick-or-Treating
- An adult should always accompany children under 12 years of age and walk in groups. Trick-or-treaters should only cross at crosswalks or street corners. Parents of older children - If you allow your older children to trick-or-treat without an adult, be sure to know where they are going. Remind them to never go into any strangers house or vehicle. We recommend that all ages trick-or-treat together in groups, with an adult. Halloween is a good opportunity to teach our young pedestrians to look left, right and left again…and to make eye contact with the driver whenever possible, before crossing. That means not being glued to their electronic device while walking. Inspect your child’s bag of treats in good lighting before letting them enjoy their goodies. Since Halloween is on a school night this year, we would expect trick-or-treating should be done by 9:30 PM, anything later on a work/school night may not be welcomed by some residents.
Drivers and homeowners
- For motorists, the most important safety tip we could give is one word,
SLOW
. Please be extra vigilant of young, excited children, running from house to house, especially when you are backing out of your garage or driveway. Pick up any trip hazards in front of your homes such as large toys, bikes, garden hoses, and garden tools.
We have some great dentists in town, but be sure to ration the treats, feed your kiddies healthy meals, and most of all, have fun!
