The Blessing of the Quilts is this Sunday
First Church News & Updates - October 19, 2018
My goodness...what a week of weather we have had! Please join us in praying for our neighbors who are affected by the continued flooding in our area.

Meanwhile, it seems like a good time to sit back and listen to our Jubilation Handbell Team ringing "Greet the Rising Sun" by Sondra Tucker.

Enjoy this First Church E-News.

A note from Dr. Pat McCain...
Dr. Pat McCain
I cannot begin to express to you and thrilled Monica and I are to be at First Church! Thank you all for making us feel so welcome and at home with you. We have especially enjoyed meeting so many of you and hearing your stories. Please keep introducing yourselves to us—again and again—and please keep praying for us.

I thank God for surrounding me with such amazing people at First Church—laity who model the servant heart of our Lord, staff who live for the sake of others, and godly pastors who love you more than you can know. I know you sense that God has brought us all together—laity, staff, and clergy—for a very special purpose and mission. Thanks for leaning into God’s heart with us as pray boldly, share boldly, invite and welcome boldly, and live and love boldly so that others might know Jesus, the Hope of the World.

We have very special things in store for us during the next couple of months. You’ll find in this newsletter opportunities to learn and grow in your faith in our many classes. You will see ways that you can join us in loving the children and families around us (like volunteering at our annual Trunk or Treat Fall Festival next weekend!). You will find opportunities to care for those in need in our community, like our Angel Tree project and Thanksgiving bags. Please let us know how we can help you find your place to belong, grow, and give back!

I am so excited about this coming Sunday morning! In addition to the awesome Sunday School and worship services, we will be blessing the quilts. These beautiful quilts are made by our Quilting Ministry for young people who have been through trauma in their lives. They will be displayed in the sanctuary and Family Life Center —a stunning sight! Our prayer for these quilts is that same prayer we offer for our own lives—that God would help us to wrap others in His love so that they might know the comfort, hope, and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Can’t wait to see you all!

Early Response Training is coming up on October 27
Terry Crain and Dave Scott will be teaching a class on how to become an Early Responder for Central Texas Conference United Methodist Church (CTCUMC) on October 27, 2018 at Hutto Discovery UMC.

One of the primary ways the Central Texas Conference responds to disasters is via our Early Response Team (ERT). Our CTC ERTs respond to disasters within the conference, as well as to help other areas facing disasters. The mission of an Early Response Team is to provide a caring presence in the aftermath of a disaster, under very specific guidelines that enables a team to be productive and caring while causing no further harm or being a burden to the affected community.

If you are called to serve as a member of the CTC ERT, you must register and participate in one of the trainings taught throughout the year. These trainings are taught by “authorized” UMCOR trainers, and team members are given authorized ERT ID badges from UMCOR as evidence of completing the training. The topics covered in the class include the who, what, when, where and how of doing disaster response ministry, as well as some hands-on experience in the specific tasks that Early Responders are expected to accomplish in the face of a disaster.
