This Week at St. Paul's
This Saturday every member is welcome to our Stewardship Dinner at 6:30p.m. in the Parish Hall! This Sunday the choir will sing a new anthem written for the choir and organ. Listen for the beautiful duets between the soprano-tenor lines, and also between the alto-bass lines. We invite you to come and join in the meditative and healing beauty of this anthem.

Rector's Notes:
The season of Epiphany continues to illumine our ways as we slouch toward Ash Wednesday, Jerusalem, and, inevitably, toward the crucifixion and the mystery of the resurrection. Lessons ahead will provide us the resources for the hard journey of Lent. First Corinthians 13, to be read Sunday, is a good example of such provisioning, ". . . And now faith, home, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love." The story of the Gospel is not a simple story; hate oppresses, brokenness destroys, and fear divides. Yet the proclamation of love--
ἀγάπη, self-giving, sacrificing, servant love-- transcends the darkness and provides the core of the
εvαγγέλιον-
-the Good News, the Gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God. As in the Advent/Christmas cycle of the Church Year, we continue to discover the revelation of God in the movement from darkness to light. It is no less arduous, and it is no less challenging. Sometimes the juxtaposition of darkness and light gives pause and tests our resolve to faithfulness. Like the disciples, there are moments when we want to flee the pain of the story, especially as it is revealed in the anguish of the human story even today. But, it is to this life we are baptized; it is to this life we are called to be the living Body of Christ today. Finally, on Easter, we stand in awe before the empty tomb and shout, "Alleluia, Christ is Risen!" Only by taking the hard journey does the mystery of the tomb finally allow us to understand the mystery of the incarnation. Standing in that sacred liminal space between Christmas and Good Friday, can we grasp the love of God and the full holiness to which God call each of us. So we continue, slouching toward Jerusalem.

House of Abraham

Habitat for Humanity
We will be having our groundbreaking for our 7th House of Abraham build on Sunday February 10th, 2019 at 2:00PM at 7138 Bales in KCMO. All are invited to attend as we launch this rehab project. Thank you to our faith friends who will be offering prayers for this event, and for everyone for their support of this project.

On the first Sunday of every month St. Paul's celebrates birthdays and anniversaries for the month ahead.
During the 10:30 service, persons who wish to (not required) come forward for a brief word of thanks, and the naming of God's continued blessings in their lives.
Following the service we enjoy special-celebration treats, and each other's company, during Fellowship in the hall under the church. Come join us.
Pastoral Care Ministry Team Forming
Next Tuesday,
February 5th at 6:30 pm we will gather to discuss creating more collaborative and intentional ways to care for one another in the St. Paul's family. How can we respond when parishioners are stuck at home or in the hospital, celebrating the birth of a child, facing a medical procedure, or simply home recovering from something and need a friendly face, thoughtful greeting, prayers or communion? If you or any member of your family knit, cook, drive, can address and sign a greeting card, are a good organizer of people and tasks, or have other gifts you would like to offer this ministry initiative, please join us. We will meet in the library at St. Paul's Church, and end promptly at 7:30. For more information contact

Steinway* Centennial Celebration!!
Mark your calendars for
Sunday, February 24, 10:30 a.m.
On March 14, 2019, our Steinway turns 100 years old. We will celebrate our piano's "centennial" on February 24 by having a Chamber Music Sunday. Our organist, Kurt Knecht, will be joined by violinist Dorris Dai-Janssen and cellist Ho Anthony Ahn. Music will include a movement of the beautiful Fauré piano trio and the exciting first movement of the Brahms Trio #1. The service will also include, Messiaen's poignant Louange a l'eternite de Jesus [Meditation on the Eternity of Jesus] - a work written inside a Nazi prisoner of war camp. Finally, there will be a premiere of a new piece Kurt wrote for this occasion for piano trio, soprano, and baritone which will feature two vocalists from our choir, Sarah Anderson and Joshua Lawlor. It will be a Sunday to remember that celebrates our piano and the joy of music at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, KCMO.

St. Paul's Tech Squad forming: Are you a wiz with audio or livestream technology, or interested in becoming one? We have a simple systems in the church which need a few sets of trained eyes and ears to help us manage & trouble-shoot now and then. Teens, young adults, seniors - all techies are welcome to join the Tech Squad. School service hours and/or additional jewels in your crown in heaven are available. We need you.
