I hope you had a chance to make it out to Denim and Diamonds this past Saturday night. It was a great event and a great reminder of the incredible support this community provides our kids.
I hope you are able to join us next Monday night (February 11th) from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. as LHS will host our annual Showcase. Teachers, coaches, directors, and club sponsors will be located throughout our commons area for parents and students to learn more about the different opportunities available at LHS. We do this each year so students can get a clearer picture of the different offerings as they start to have conversations with counselors about registration for next year. If your student is currently in 8th through 11th grade, we invite you and your student to join us that evening. Two parent meetings are also scheduled for that night in the LHS Auditorium. Please take a few minutes to read more information below about Showcase as well as other upcoming events at LHS.

An Important Message from the School Nurse
Cold and flu season is in FULL swing! Please remember to follow these guidelines set by the Texas Administrative Code:
- Cold and flu symptoms: PLEASE keep your student home until they are symptom free!
- Temperature of 100.0 degrees or more: Student must be fever free for 24 hours, without medication, before returning to school.
- Vomiting or Diarrhea: student must be symptom free form 24 hours, without medication, before returning to school.
If your student is concerned about missing a quiz or test, please consider that they are not performing at their best when they are not feeling well. Arrangements can be made with their teacher or in the Testing Center when they come back to school.

2019-2020 and 2020-2021 School Calendars
It is time for us to prepare school calendars for the next two school years: 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. The administration will take the recommended calendars to our Board of Trustees for approval on February 20. As our practice has been, we are reaching out to you for input in order to create calendars yielding the greatest satisfaction among all Lovejoy ISD stakeholders. You will find a link to the survey below.
As your superintendent, I will work to preserve a calendar that is in the best interest of both teaching/learning and a calendar that facilitates student attendance, which generates state funding. Please find some considerations, which will influence our decision-making:
- For instructional reasons, all school weeks must have a minimum of three attendance days with four days as the preference.
- Holidays such as Christmas must allow enough travel time for families so that we do not see a decreased attendance rate on the last school day prior to a holiday e.g. Friday before Christmas break.
- The start of the school year must allow sufficient days for teacher professional development and teacher workdays to ensure we are ready for school to begin.
- Student holidays will be aligned to traditional holidays such as Columbus Day when practical.
- Single student holidays must be strategically placed to allow appropriate teacher planning to support the instructional calendar e.g. a student holiday on the Monday after Thanksgiving would not be a good time for teacher planning as the semester is almost over.

As a reminder, for the Team Presentation, three to five students collaborate as a team to identify a problem or issue. Team members work together to develop a research question; they then identify approaches, perspectives, or lenses for examining the question and divide responsibilities among themselves for individual research. Individually, students investigate their assigned approach, perspective, or lens on the issue or topic of the team research question.
Each student presents his or her findings and analysis to the group in a well-written individual report that:
* identifies the area of investigation and its relationship to the overall problem or issue;
* summarizes, explains, analyzes, and evaluates the main ideas and reasoning in the chosen
sources;
* identifies, compares, and interprets a range of perspectives about the problem or issue; and
* cites all sources used and includes a list of works cited or bibliography.
Working collaboratively, the team considers all the research and analyses from individual team members for the purpose of proposing one or more solutions or resolutions. The team:
* collaboratively synthesizes and evaluates individual findings and perspectives to create a
collective understanding of different approaches to the problem or issue;
* considers potential solutions or resolutions and conducts additional research in order to
evaluate different solutions within the context of the problem; and
* proposes one or more solutions or resolutions and prepares an argument to support their
proposal.
The team develops an 8-10 minute presentation that presents a convincing argument for the proposed solutions or recommendations. The team should ensure the claims made are supported by evidence and that they have considered different perspectives and the limitations and implications of their proposed solutions or recommendations. The presentation and the media used to enhance the presentation should consider audience, context, and purpose. Following the presentation, the team will defend its argument, with each student responding to a question posed by the teacher. Each team member should be prepared to answer questions about any part of the presentation. Once the recording for College Board is turned off, audience members may ask questions of the team.

This annual Lovejoy Tournament continues to be a hit around the metroplex. Come join your fellow chess players on March 30 at Sloan Creek for a wonderful day of chess play. This five round tournament awards the top three players in each section a trophy and fourth place receives a chocolate bunny. Gather up a team from your school and compete together. We are collecting items to donate to hospitals that treat children's cancer. Ready Fighter One was my friend MJ's last wish. MJ was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and passed away on the 11th.
Boxes for donations will be located at all campuses. MJ's school would not allow us to host the drive. I thought the next best thing would be to host it at Lovejoy. My team and I would handle all the details all we need is your support and time."
New! Senior Project benefiting the American Cancer Society
"Hello everyone. My name is Madison Waters and I am a senior at Lovejoy High School. This year for my senior project I will be raising money for the American Cancer Society through donations and by hosting a volleyball camp for boys and girls from 1st grade to 6th grade. The camp will be held at Willow Springs Middle School on Tuesday, February 19th from 5:30-8:00 PM. The cost is $15 per child.
All proceeds from the camp and donations will be given to the American Cancer Society. This foundation funds and conducts research and spreads information with the mission to free the world of cancer. The money they receive goes towards research and support for patients.
Next year I will be attending the University of Cincinnati where I will play volleyball and earn a degree in business.

The referral window for students in grades 1-11 for gifted and talented services is open February 1 - March 8. Referral forms are located online in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Testing is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 and April 6. Appointments will be sent via email after the referral window closes March 8.

New! Lovejoy Gifted Association Announces Rocket Build and Launch Events
3...2...1... Lift-off!
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first people to land on the moon with the Lovejoy Gifted Association's Rocket Fest. The Lovejoy Gifted Association is partnering with the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) for their annual LGA Rocket Fest. This event is suitable for students in grades 3 thru 6. Participants may choose between a basic and an advanced rocket model.
There will be a Rocket Build Party in the Sloan Creek Cafeteria
on Wednesday, March 6th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm
where a volunteer from DARS will talk the junior rocket scientists through building the basic rocket step-by-step. Participants purchasing the advanced rocket may pick up their build package that same evening and are welcome to start building at SCIS or build at home.

Boys' Soccer - Teacher Appreciation Night
The Lovejoy Boys' Soccer teams are honoring their favorite teachers this Friday between the JV and Varsity games. The teachers will enjoy dinner in the field house classroom at 5:30, and then will be escorted across the field at 6:40.
Varsity has started the season off strong with a 10-1-2 record. JV is also doing well with a 5-4-1 record. This Friday will mark the first district game of the season against Wylie East. Come out and support the Soccer teams and their favorite teachers!!

Allen Americans Scholar of the Month
Andy Pottinger was recently honored at an Allen Americans hockey game as the Scholar of the Month. He was presented with a plaque at center ice and was also asked up to the broadcast booth for an interview. Andy is a senior in the Top 5% of his class, a National AP Scholar, has accumulated over 550 hours of community service in his high school career, and is captain of the Lovejoy Varsity hockey team, as well as the LHS Computer Science Team. Andy will pursue his lifelong passion for space when he begins studying Aerospace Engineering in college this fall.

LHS Swimming
Leopards Shine at District Championships - one for the record books. The Boys Varsity Swim Teams were giant killers as they recently upset the two-time Regional and State Champion Highland Park Scots for their second ever district title. In a meet in which every swim counted, the Leopards eeked out a 6 point victory, with 16 members of the team and all 3 relays advancing to the Regional Championships. The victory was highlighted by another school record falling in the Boys 200 Medley Relay (J. Jones, H. Dean, J. Vaughn, M. Mueth).
The Lady Leopards fell just short of an upset of their own, losing to the defending Regional Champs Lady Scots by 10 points. They were led by Junior diving phenom, Ana Laura Faoro, who re-broke her own school record, putting her as the top diver in the Region moving into the diving portion of the competition this Thursday. The meet was capped off by Senior Natalie Womack winning Female Swimmer of the Meet.
The Leopards won 12 events at the meet, qualifying 30 individuals (in 49 events) and all 6 relays to the Regional Championships to be held in Frisco. The Leopards are looking for an historic weekend trying to have both teams place in the top 3 at the Regional Championships for the first time in school history. It is sure to be a weekend of new school records and births to the state meet!
LHS CHOIR
The Lovejoy Choir hosted the UIL Region 25 Vocal/Piano Solo & Ensemble Contest on Saturday, February 2. Not only did the LHS Choir students perform well, they served as monitors, score runners, and provided hospitality to nearly 1,000 students participating in the contest! Of the 35 entries from LHS, 23 soloists and 6 ensembles received first division ratings.

The Lovejoy Orchestra program hosted and competed in the Region 25 UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest on Saturday, Feb. 2nd. The orchestra students performed amazingly as well as worked to host judges, parents, directors, and students, run scores to contest office, and run concession stand. We had several compliments for our student workers from judges and parents from all over the region.
Of the 40 solo and ensemble entries, we had 35 Superior/First Division ratings!

LHS Track and Field
Senior James Rainey won both Shot Put and Discus events at the inaugural Throwsfactory Throwdown held at Lovejoy High School on Saturday, February 1st. Rainey won the Shot Put event with a throw of 54' 3" and the Discus Event with a mark of 153' 1".
The Lady Leopards also had three throwers in the competition. Ally Carraway and Abby Carraway tied for 8th place in Discus with a throw of 63' 11". Emily Lawler placed 10th with a throw of 62' 4". In Shot Put Ally Carraway, Emily Lawler, and Abby Carraway placed 8th (23' 5"), 9th (22' 8.75"), and 11th (20' 1.5") respectively.
The Leopards Track and Field team will compete in their first outdoor meet of the season at the McKinney Boyd Relays on February 22nd and 23rd.

LHS Basketball Clinches Playoff Spot
The boys basketball program won two decisive wins this week. On Tuesday, the Leopards traveled to Sherman and cruised to a 79-59 win. Lovejoy was led in scoring by Jonathan Lawrence with 18 points while Luke Ledebur, Kolby McSpadden, and Carson Holden chipped in with 14 apiece.
On Friday, Lovejoy hosted the 3rd place Princeton Panthers. In a dominating performance on both ends of the floor, Lovejoy held Princeton to 24 points through three quarters of play while shooting a blistering 58% from the 3 point line. Kolby McSpadden led all scorers with 26 points and Holden added 13 points. Kyle Olson was a strong facilitator adding a career high 7 assists.
With the win, Lovejoy has clinched a playoff spot with three games to play. Tuesday is a big matchup as the Leopards travel to 1st place McKinney North. With a win, Lovejoy will pull into a two-way tie for 1st.
The Lovejoy Sub-Varsity teams continue to roll. The JV remains undefeated in District with a 62-30 win over Sherman and 55-34 win over Princeton. The Freshmen are on a 4-game win streak as they defeated Sherman 65-32 and Princeton 54-28. The JV Red punctuated the week with a defeat of The Colony Cougars. Congratulations to all of the teams!

LHS Girls Basketball
This past Friday's game was special for many reasons: We had the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of our four Seniors: Alex Brungardt, Sarah Collins, Ireland Miller, and Casey Perkins. At the same time, we also presented a check to Cornerstone Ranch as a part of our annual shoot-a-thon charitable contribution.
Another very important part of the night's festivities was presenting a check to Cornerstone Ranch for $2,579! This money came from our annual shoot-a-thon. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from this event are donated to a local charity, organization, or family as an extension of the Graduate Profile Pillar of "Works for Justice in The Community". This is an amazing program, and we hope they are able to use the money to continue to support some amazing people!
On the court, the Lady Leopards finished the night with three big wins. The Varsity team defeated Princeton by a score of 59-36. The Leopards were led by Grace Bennett with 22 points and Carsen McFadden who had a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Other scorers included Ireland Miller 9 points, Sarah Collins 6 points, Alexandra Brungardt 4 points, Julia Brochu 4 points, and Addison Hand 2 points. Other statistical leaders were Alexandra Brungardt 13 rebounds and 3 steals, and Carsen McFadden 3 assists and 1 charge. The win put the Leopards in third place in the district standings.
The JV Black team pushed their district record to 19-6 and 8-1 after defeating Princeton by a score of 42-35. Leading scorer for the Leopards was Gracie Tillinghast with 24 points. Other scorers included Abigail Omobogie 8 points, Lily Herran 6 points, Kylie Bayrd 2 points, and Victoria Lafon 2 points.
The JV Red team defeated Lonestar by a score of 49-31 in the final game of the night. Lovejoy executed on both ends of the floor taking an early lead and led by 11 at half. They continued to get stops on defense and push in transition, extending the lead to as much as 22 during the second half. Leading the Lady Leopards was Molly Gornell with 13 and Soli Stubbs with 10. Salena Jacob added 8 points, Isabel Martinez and Maddi Rumsey each gave 6, Hallel Pang added 4, and Maddie Clancy had 2. The Lady Leopards improve to 5-2 in district play and 12-8 overall.
The Leopards will be back in action for their final district game as they travel to McKinney North to take on the Lady Bulldogs.
LHS Wrestling
We wrestled our last two duals this past Thursday to help get us ready for our varsity district tournament on February 7th. Our men wrestled well and got to see some tough competition in LD Bell and Prosper. Both teams are 6A schools with some talented wrestlers. We will not see them again as our district-region-state tournaments will be with just 5A schools. Our men defeated LD Bell, but lost to Prosper. We finish our season with an 11-3 dual record.
Our women wrestled very well once again-winning 13 out of the 16 matches while competing against Melissa, Prosper, and Bell!
Freshman Avery Ashley, Junior Katherine Heath, and Senior Morgan Elvin all went undefeated, going 3-0 each!

Our men's team wrestled well to open up the duals with a strong 43-21 win over LD Bell. The following men finished the night winning both of their matches: Johnny Dorlon, Hunter Duncan, Alex Vislosky, and Ralph Rucker.

The Varsity and JV teams have been busy Striking It Up! The Leopards had a clean sweep against both Plano East and Prosper High School.
During the match against Plano East, we had multiple bowlers qualify for their Letterman Jackets.

LHS Computer Science Team
The LHS Computer Science team participated in the Digital Diva's annual Programming Contest and Computer Science Expo this past Saturday. Lovejoy took 14 young women (5 teams) and competed in three categories Advanced, Novice, and Beginner. The contest packet consisted of 24 problems worth varying points and had 2 hours to solve as many of the problems as possible. Lovejoy took 2nd place in the Advanced contest with the team of Ruiyi He, Katherine Guo and Katie Rink.

Boys' Soccer
On
Friday night
,
the Varsity Leopards soccer team hosted the Wildcats from Sulphur Springs in their last non-district match up the 2019 season. The Leopards matched up with the Wildcats in the 2018 playoffs, coming away with a 2-1 win to advance. This year the game was very similar, with both teams playing with high energy and great spirit. The first half saw no goals conceded by either team, although both sides had chances. Early in the second half, Sulphur Springs was able to draw first blood, beating keeper Sammy Merrick to his left. Down 1-0 the Leopards stormed back, possessing the ball for much of the remaining half. After spending 10 minutes in Sulphur Springs half of the field, Benji Merrick was able to connect
with Caleb Toomey inside the 18-
yard box, and Toomey buried the ball passed the Wildcat's keeper. Unfortunately, even with being able to control the ball the rest of the half, the Leopards could not find the winner, tying 1-1.
The boys will be back in action this Friday at 7:15 pm at Leopard Stadium, for their first district game of the season. They will take on Wylie East.

Lovejoy Offers Group Counseling
Lovejoy is offering group counseling for students for a variety of areas. The groups will meet weekly, during school hours, and will be facilitated by Lovejoy's Social Worker, Noelle Gove, LCSW. The overall goal of the counseling groups is to address student's social/emotional needs that may be impacting their experience and success at school. Groups are being offered, based on need, to every campus in the district, grades K-12.

Lovejoy Mom Selected for 2019 Boston Marathon
Lovejoy mom, Tracy Sutherlin, is asking for your help in raising money to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Team in Training.
"Hi Friends, this is Tracy Sutherlin. I know you've seen me running the streets of Allen, Fairview and Lucas for many years and you know that running is my passion. I'm super excited to announce that I've been selected to be the North Texas Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) Team In Training Representative at the 2019 Boston Marathon. Not only do I get to fulfill a lifelong dream of running the Boston Marathon, I get to do it for a purpose!
Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 9 minutes someone dies from one. More than 1.3 million people are living with, or are in remission from Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma. Sadly, more than 1/3 of blood cancer patients do not survive 5 years after diagnosis. LLS fund's research provides patients guidance, education & support. LLS also drives advocacy for policies that protect patients access to life saving treatments.
I am running to honor and celebrate two amazing Lovejoy students. Mallory Cass and Austin Bennett. Mallory is a 7th grader at Willow Springs Middle School and was diagnosed with Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2014. Austin is a senior at Lovejoy High School and was diagnosed with ALL in 2017. Mallory, Austin and so many others have fought and battled to beat this disease to get across the ultimate finish line of being cancer free!
I've been given the opportunity to raise money for LLS that provides funds to champion the fight in battling this disease. As you think about your charitable giving at the end of this year (or even in 2019) and where it can have the most impact, I ask that you consider helping me in this cause by donating to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
