District News:
Earn $250 by referring a new bus driver:
Emporia Public Schools is in need of bus drivers for the 20-21 school year.  This is a perfect opportunity for someone who may be retired, want flexibility in their schedule, or who has school days off.   USD 253 employees can earn a $250 referral bonus when new bus drivers include the district employee's name on their employment application.  The $250 referral bonus will arrive after the driver has been on the job for six months.   Additionally, new drivers will receive a $250 bonus on their first paycheck and another $250 bonus once training and CDL endorsement are complete.   For more information contact Amy Larson at 620-341- 2330.  Click here to apply!

Remote Learning Opportunities For Fall:
Emporia Schools plans to provide a remote learning experience for families who have a student or family member who is medically fragile and potentially for families who have a safety concern with returning to school.  Right now, we know that a remote learning experience will most likely include:  daily teacher and student check-in, daily attendance requirements, completing class assignments and assessments, and parent involvement.  If this is something you or someone you know would like more information about, please contact us by emailing [email protected] . and provide your students' name/s, school, and grade level. This will help us as we further develop our remote learning plan.  Once we have more information available it will be shared with our district families.

Online Enrollment for the 20-21 school year is now open:
Enrollment can be completed from any location with internet access on your students' district-issued Chromebook or any other device as long as it is submitted on or before August 5.

Board Discussion:
On Wednesday evening the USD 253 Board of Education met to discuss a variety of topics related to USD 253's reopening plan.  At this point there are a number of questions that are still being discussed however, several plans are already in place as the district moves forward with plans for returning to school.  Currently we know:

1.  Executive Order 20-59 is in effect and mandates face coverings for everyone entering a K-12 school building with the exception of those with a medical condition and children who are not students and who are under the age of 5. Additional impacts include:
  • Screening questions and temperature checks will occur when entering a school building for the first time each day
  • three to six feet social distancing will be in place unless a facial covering is worn
  • hand sanitizer or hand washing will be required one time per hour
2. Executive Order 20-58, The State Board of Education voted 5-5 on Governor Kelly's executive order to delay the start of school.  Since a majority vote was needed the order did not pass.  This leaves the start of school date to our local school board.

3. Considerations for medically fragile staff and students
  • Staff members where asked to contact the Human Resources Department by the end of June if they are medically fragile. This will allow the district to work with those staff members individually to determine if work place accommodations are needed.
  • Parents who have students that are medically fragile or who have safety concerns have the opportunity to request remote learning options by emailing [email protected]
4. The district plans to survey and/or host virtual meetings with staff and parents regarding remote learning plans. This will provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to give input on reopening as plans continue to be further developed and modified.

5. The district continues to plan for all aspects of reopening.  At the forefront and a guiding principle of that planning is safety and equity.  A draft of that plan summarizing the potential reopening models can be reviewed by clicking here.   Reopening Draft

Board members had the opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts regarding the district's reopening plan.  That discussion was captured for the district leadership team to review and discuss as planning continues over the next several days.  Plans will also be shared with Building Leadership Teams and Parent Building Stakeholder groups. It is the intent that many of those questions can be answered  and the board can take action when they meet again on Wednesday, July 29 at 7:00 pm.
