Letter from the Principal
|
February 2019
Dear Marist Families,
Welcome to the Second Semester!! Report Cards and Honor Lists are being formulated as I write this letter! Hopefully, you'll be receiving good news! Although we do not host parent-teacher conferences at the end of this quarter, don't let that stop you from contacting the teachers via email!
As you are aware, students and families who receive Marist financial aid are required to fulfill certain obligations:
- Maintain at least a B average: GPA 83.0;
- Be involved in at least one activity, sport, or part-time job;
- Accrue no more than 5 unexcused absences or 5 unexcused tardies per year;
- Perform service inside or outside the school;
- Parent/Guardian should become an active member of the Parent Association.
Just a reminder, you must reapply for Marist Aid and SFIC annually. You'll be sent a link by SFIC soon so that you can reapply on-line. Be mindful of their deadlines. SPA scholarships repeat annually without your need to renew.
Our International Student Program is now in its fifth year and flourishing. The companies that we partner with are always looking for homestay families. If you have an extra room in your house and extra room in your heart, it is an opportunity to consider: the homestay family earns $1200 a month. For more information, please reach out to Jeanette Begin at
jeanette.begin@thecambridgenetwork
or Anicia Ariza at
aariza20@yahoo.com
.
Interested in becoming a homestay parent, but not quite convinced? How about hosting an International Student for a two-week stint in early August? We may have an opportunity for you to try it out and earn a little cash. Call Ms. Vargas at ext. 200 if you are curious. You'd be helping Marist, an International student, and yourself!
Mr. Romano will be announcing some exciting developments about our recent innovation, the Merit/Demerit System. He and his Faculty and Student advisories are creating a Catalog of items on which students can spend their merits. In addition, a demerit free quarter erases half of the demerits of the prior quarter! Mr. Romano will be speaking to the student body about both of these features at the Year Level Assemblies on Feb. 5. How will these affect your son/daughter? Please let Mr. Romano know!
Please read this Newletter in its entirety. There is a request for items for the MPA Tricky Tray and an invitation for Marist Talent to strut its stuff! You don't want to miss out. Let's commit ourselves to getting off to a good start in this new semester.
Sincerely,
Ms. Alice J. Miesnik

Activity Period:
Takes place Wednesday, February 13th. Ask your son/daughter what activity they are participating in and how much fun they are having!
Communicate:
Please communicate with your son's/daughter's teachers via e-mail or voice-mail, especially if he/she did not do well in a given subject. Now is the time to devise an improvement plan. Help is available: ask a teacher for extra help, go to the Library Media Center for tutoring after school Monday through Thursday, or go to Study Hall (mandatory for those who fail 2 or more subjects).

Campus Ministry News
Mr. Michael Power
|
Encounter:
This past weekend, eight of our upperclassmen spent the weekend in Esopus at the Marist Brothers Center. They learned more about the special Marist spiritual tradition. This is a time for our students to reflect on their time here at Marist and on new transitions and upcoming journeys in their lives. Please pray for these students as they return to school and work together to continue the mission of Marcellin Champagnat.
Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Service: On January 30th, as a school we celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We reflected on his life and our duty as citizens and believers to make the world a better place. We were reminded that the challenge of justice for all is an everyday activity, and not just when it is convenient. We were also joined by our Gospel Choir and Knight Jam, who helped to lift our spirits with their wonderful musical selections. Parents, please know you always have an open invitation to join us in community during any Mass or Prayer Service!
"On the Road" Retreat:
During the last week of January, Marist was invited to host a leadership themed retreat at Liberty Charter Community School. Our fantastic Retreat Leaders, accompanied by our Campus Minister Mr. Power, helped lead a retreat of over seventy middle school students. We tackled big issues in leadership while having a lot of fun! We look forward to going back later in the Spring with our follow-up retreat and to expanding our retreat program offerings!

FAFSA Days:
For any Seniors who have yet to fill out their FAFSA for college, please check out the following link: http://www.hesaa.org/Pages/NJFAFSAGO.aspx or https://www.hesaa.org/Documents/FAFSA/NJFAFSACompletionEvents2018-2019.pdf
for a list of colleges around New Jersey that will be hosting FAFSA Days that help families get free assistance filling out this mandatory document. Regardless of your financial standing, ALL colleges require that you fill out this form. Why not take advantage of this free resource to help you through the process? Let your counselor know if you have any questions!
Summer Opportunities:
Please make sure your son or daughter has been checking their email for Summer Program opportunities. The counselors forward any opportunities that come through their email. If you are at a loss of where to begin, and would like to know more about a program in a specific career field, or academic setting, please let your counselor know, and she'd be happy to help you!
This is a wonderful way to set yourself apart when it comes to college and scholarship applications. So, think seriously about applying to such a program. We also encourage students to spend the summer volunteering--be it at a camp, through their local Boys and Girls club or local Y, at a sports camp, local church, or hospital--as there are many ways for students to gain valuable experience in an area that interests them.
College Acceptances and Scholarships
We are so proud of the hard work this year's Senior class has put in to get their college applications done early. We have 80 acceptances on file, and the class has already earned $ 2.3 million in scholarship and grants. If your son or daughter has an acceptance letter gathering dust at home, please remind them to bring it in, so that we are able to celebrate their accomplishment with them! We are incredibly proud of this group of young men and women--they are a true testament to your continued support!
New Addition!!!:
We are happy to celebrate the birth of Sofia Pagano, to Mrs. Pagano on January 8th! While Mrs. Pagano is out on maternity leave, Ms. E and Ms. Heymer will be sharing her caseload. A letter from Mrs. Pagano will be sent home with Report Cards indicating which counselor parents may contact with questions or concerns until she returns in April.
