          2018 Vital SignsŪ Launch Event

Community Foundation for Kingston & Area                                 is releasing our 10th edition of Vital SignsŪ

We will reflect on our city and area's progress over the past ten years, with an in-depth look at key areas of community well-being, and engage in a discussion on poverty and the significant health implications of living in poverty.

Guest speakers include:

Judi Wyatt -  a retired high school teacher of English, having taught for the Limestone Board and in Lima, Peru. She is a recipient of the YMCA's Peace Medallion and has written a virtual textbook called War and Children. Judi is one of the creators of The Poverty Challenge, an experiential educational event to teach adults and high school and university students about urban poverty.

Reanna King - Poverty Expert. A graduate of the Social Service Worker program at St. Lawrence College. She works at Martha's Table, a non-profit charitable organization.  There she prepares low-cost nutritious meals for those in need, serving up to 140 people a day. Reanna has been a volunteer with The Poverty Challenge since 2009.

Mike Bell - the CEO at Kingston Community Health Centres and has spent 10 years in the CHC sector.  KCHC and the CHC sector strive to serve marginalized and vulnerable people and communities.  Mike holds a MA in Health Policy and a MSc in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. Prior to his current role he was the Program Operational Director for the Cancer Program at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

Ms. Wyatt and Ms. King will hold a conversation about the lived experience of poverty including discussing the significant health implications of living in poverty.

Mike Bell will provide a vision of health equity, how it can ameliorate some of the physical and mental health issues faced by those living in poverty, and how KCHC makes this vision happen.

A discussion moderated by Dr. Ian Gemmill, former Medical Officer of Health for Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Public Health, will follow.
