College Possible makes MLK Day of Service a DAY ON!

More than 50 AmeriCorps members and staff from College Possible participated in the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service this year, providing service at four different community volunteer activities in collaboration with other area nonprofits in Milwaukee. Joining with them at some of the project sites were Governor Tony Evers, Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, and Attorney General Josh Kaul.

College Possible helped to make the national day of service honoring Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. "a Day ON, Not a Day Off" by joining it the following four projects:
  • Painting murals at Hopkins Lloyd Elementary School and Longfellow Public School
  • Assembling teacher appreciation kits for teachers at local schools
  • Assisting with the annual community celebration on MLK Day at the Martin Luther King Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library
  • Helping finalize a house building project coordinated by Habitat for Humanity

ECLIPSE AmeriCorps MLK Day of Service Event

The UW-Eau Claire ECLIPSE program hosted a successful Martin Luther King Day of Service project that had nearly 60 participants provide service to assist the efforts of several non-profit organizations that serve people living in the Eau Claire area. The project had a significant increase in volunteers from the local community and university, including members of the UW-Eau Claire Wrestling and Softball teams.

The project started with ECLIPSE AmeriCorps members serving lunch at The Community Table. While many of the ECLIPSE members stayed at The Community Table to clean up following the meal, the volunteers from the community and university left to provide service at Feed My People Food Bank, Girls on the Run, the Humane Society, and Hope Gospel Mission.

The project was organized by ECLIPSE AmeriCorps member Leah Barron. Leah is serving her second term as an AmeriCorps member with the ECLIPSE program, having worked with students in early childhood centers to provide interventions in literacy, numeracy, and social skills during her first term.

Public Allies Milwaukee serving at True Skool
MLK Day of Service 2019

As part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the AmeriCorps members at Public Allies Milwaukee volunteered at True Skool, whose mission is to engage, educate, empower youth and communities through the creative arts and hip hop culture. Throughout the day, 40 AmeriCorps members from Public Allies organized the art and music equipment, cleared out additional spaces, and painted multiple rooms at True Skool. The AmeriCorps members were joined in their service by two state representatives from Milwaukee, David Bowen and Jonathan Brostoff.

PASS AmeriCorps members honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

PASS AmeriCorps members participated in two events on the Martin Luther King Day of Service, helping to make it a DAY ON.

Eighteen PASS AmeriCorps members assisted with the MLK Youth Call to Service Event, during which nearly 100 middle and high school youth from across Madison came together to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through interactive workshops, a brief march around the capitol, and participation in the Freedom Sing-In at the Overture Center. Workshop topics included youth volunteerism, the role of poetry in the civil rights movement, and the history of freedom songs in the civil rights movement.

Thirteen PASS AmeriCorps members also served at the annual MLK Outstanding Youth Recognition Breakfast in honor of MLK National Day of Service. The event is hosted by the Urban League of Greater Madison and is one of the largest family observances of the King Holiday in Wisconsin. The breakfast, held on Sunday during the King Holiday weekend, attracted more than 900 youth, families, volunteers and community leaders.

Providing Service during the Extreme Cold
Volunteer Wisconsin AmeriCorps member Katie Lindquist

Katie Linquist is a Volunteer Wisconsin AmeriCorps member through Marshfield Clinic Health System who is serving at Beaver Creek Reserve in Eau Claire County. The following is a reflection on a day of her service during the extreme cold hitting Wisconsin the last week of January.

Yesterday, I helped Positive Avenues (a daytime resource center open to those experiencing mental health concerns or homelessness in Eau Claire) serve their noon meal. They are located directly underneath Community Table, so they plan their meals at different times than Community Table, to help people have access to a hot meal more often. This week, in conjunction with Community Table, each organization opened an hour earlier than usual, to limit times when those without shelter would need to be outside in these excruciating temperatures.

Today, when I arrived at Positive Avenues, there was a UW Eau Claire student handing out tie blankets that she and her family had made for those who need an extra something to keep warm. Positive Avenues also received free Bombas socks to hand out. I helped orchestrate the handout of these warming items while chatting with community members who frequent Positive Avenues.

New Program Staff Gain Skills and Experience at the New Program and Staff Boot Camp 2019

This January, fourteen people from current and potential AmeriCorps programs in Wisconsin made it through the winter snowstorms to attend the New Program and Staff Boot Camp in Madison. The attendees represented five currently operating programs, two programs currently working under a planning grant, and another outside organization exploring beginning an AmeriCorps program.

The boot camp covered several topics, including: an overview of larger landscape of AmeriCorps and national service, rules and regulation, program management, site management, compliance, and enhancing the experience for our AmeriCorps members. This boot camp is hosted annually as part of the cycle of trainings and workshops hosted by Serve Wisconsin to provide support for its AmeriCorps programs.
