February 15: There will be presentations on Brazil (2-3 p.m.) and Israel (3-4 p.m.).
March 15: Presentations will be on Italy (2-3 p.m) and Cuba (3-4 p.m.).
April 19: Presentation about safaris in South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania from 2-3 p.m.
We are still looking for speakers to fill the following meeting slots:

June 21: 2-3 and 3-4 p.m.
In addition, we will need speakers for the rest of the year and would welcome anyone willing to share his/her travel experiences

with others informally, that is okay.

OLLI's Adverse Weather Policy
OLLI classes, events, meetings and other activities will be canceled or delayed when UNC Asheville classes are canceled or delayed for adverse weather. We occasionally will cancel or delay classes when the university does not if conditions in the area or on campus may pose a danger to our members.
By 8 a.m. on bad weather days, the OLLI staff will post specific program information on our outgoing messages at 828.251.6140 and on our website at olliasheville.com.
We will, if possible, send an email to OLLI members by 8 a.m. explaining how weather will affect events scheduled on bad weather days.
Please remember that ours is a program of learning for the love of it. If conditions are unsafe where you are, please stay in!

"Refugees and Global Migration"

Today, no countries have open borders. Every state in today's global system has its own laws and policies about who is permitted to cross its borders, and how they will do so. Who determines whether someone is a refugee or a migrant? How have different countries, including the United States, reacted to migration? How effective are the international laws, policies and organizations that have evolved to assist and protect refugees and migrants?
Mark Gibney is the Belk Distinguished Professor at UNC Asheville in the political science department and an Affiliated Professor at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Lund, Sweden.
The Great Decisions Program is the oldest and largest grassroots world affairs educational program of its kind in the country. Begun in 1954, it is the flagship program of the Foreign Policy Association, a non-partisan, non-governmental organization. The Great Decisions Program's goal is to discuss, debate, and learn about International Affairs, National Security, and U.S. Foreign Policy.
These lectures are free to WAC members and undergraduate students and $10 at the door for all other participants. OLLI membersr receive a discount on WAC membership.

Navigating Farm Labor Workshop

This 6-hour workshop will showcase how to structure labor on a small farm through the eyes of established regional farmers. This is a great workshop to attend if you have been farming and are looking to take your farm to the next level by bringing on additional labor support. Dear OLLI Members,
We are excited that classes will begin Monday, January 14. For now it appears that we will have a rainy, cold day, but no snow. Please see the adverse weather policy in this newsletter, just in case.
UNC Asheville undergraduate classes
will also begin tomorrow, so please be careful in the parking lots as everyone gets back in the swing of things. Don't forget that you can park in lots P1 and P2, right off Broadway at the bottom of Campus Drive and take the Purple Shuttle to the Reuter Center. The shuttles arrive every 15 minutes or so, beginning at 8:40 a.m.
You may want to be aware that there have been some changes to the traffic patterns on University Heights. A
ll traffic entering campus on University Heights from the traffic circle on W.T. Weaver will be directed to the right at the Y intersection at the top of the hill. Vehicles will then make a left turn at the intersection of University Heights and Edgewood Road to enter campus.
Traffic will remain two-way on University Heights until vehicles reach the speed table at Highsmith Student Union. Traffic from the speed table at Highsmith Student Union to the Y intersection beyond Zeis Hall will become one-way to allow for construction in Reed Plaza.

Welcome to OLLI at UNC Asheville
If a new OLLI membership was in your holiday stocking, consider yourself quite the lucky soul! So many new opportunities await you, it can be hard to choose. The same goes for long-time members. Whether you decide to sign up for a couple of College for Seniors courses, take your time learning about your new hometown by joining a Special Interest Group (SIG), or maybe even dropping into several of the Fab Friday lunchtime sessions, your days are sure to be livelier than they were before you joined OLLI!
Read through your OLLI catalog at a leisurely pace, and mark up all the things that interest you. The catalog is chockful of goodness! Then decide where you want to wade in!
OLLI at UNC Asheville is one of the few in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes network that boasts its own dedicated building. One enormous advantage we enjoy is that it's so much easier to build a sense of community here! Described by some as an "ex-pat community for seniors," OLLI membership can mean instant friendships. Many of us have moved to Asheville from distant spots and have started all over here with new housing as well as goods and services of all sorts. Getting to know folks who have shared those same experiences can save lots of time and perhaps help avoid a few missteps along the way.
If you're looking for a New Year's Resolution, or even if you're not, meeting new OLLI friends is one great place to start. That suggestion is just as valid for seasoned members as it is for newbies. Reach out - you'll be glad you did. You can make a difference in someone's day - don't be surprised if it makes a difference in yours, too!

Meditation SIG with Jacquie Wollins
Bringing in the New Year

After overeating, dealing with too much or too little company, traveling and general tumult, come join the Meditation SIG on the 14th for a de-stressing meditation using the SILVA TECHNIQUE. Jacquie Wollins has been teaching Functional Meditation at OLLI for several years and will be providing another class this spring. If you have been in Jacquie's class or attended other SIG meetings she has led, then you know that you are in for a treat. Novices are welcome. Come learn about yet another approach to mindfulness and meditation.
The Meditation SIG meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month from 4:15 - 5:45 in room #120 of the Reuter Center. All OLLI members are welcome.

Symphony Talk

MASTERWORKS 4:Offenbach, Saint-Saëns, Poulenc, Berlioz
Vive la France! Masterworks 4 celebrates the work of four very distinct French composers. Offenbach's Overture to Gaîté Parisienne, inspired by the amorous high spirits of the City of Light, sets the scene. Cellist Daniel Kaler, winner of the Payne Prize, will dazzle with Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto. The Asheville Symphony Chorus then takes the stage to present Poulenc's delightful and mystic Gloria. We finish, fittingly, with Berlioz's grandiose La Marseillaise.
Symphony Talks are an interesting and educational way to hear about the music to be performed at upcoming Asheville Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Masterworks performances. The program begins with a presentation by Chip Kaufmann who talks about the life and times of the featured composers. ASO Music Director Darko Butorac and guest conductors appear with soloists for upcoming concerts to talk about how the musicians prepare and to offer ways to listen during the performance.

College for Seniors announces a theme term on Appalachia for Fall 2019 (September 16- November 8). While a varied array of courses will be offered during the Fall term, the theme term is also an opportunity to create courses aligned with this special theme.

Advance Care Planning Workshop
Thursday, February 7, 5:30 p.m.
This workshop will feature a panel whose members are experienced in addressing end-of-life issues. Discussion will include communicating your treatment wishes to loved ones and to medical personnel, ethical and legal issues, and the uses of advance directives. Ample time will be reserved for questions. Assistance will be provided for anyone wishing to complete a legally valid advance directive, including the notarization required in North Carolina, using the NC ACP "Short Form".
If you have never been admitted to Mission Hospital, but want your advanced directives added to the Mission Medical Record,
click here for an Advance Directive Permission form to fill out. Also, if you have existing advance directives, you may mail the "Permission Form" along with a copy of your existing Advance Directive to Mission for addition to the Mission medical record (or you can get help doing this at the next ACP workshop).

Are you new to Medicare? Are you confused by the many choices? Unbiased and accurate information is available from trained volunteers from the North Carolina Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). This session will be an overview (plans, parts and policies) of Medicare. Spaces are limited, and registration is required. Reserve your space by calling the Council on Aging of Buncombe County at 828.277.8288. In addition, beginning at noon, representatives from the Social Security Administration will be available to answer questions about Social Security benefits and Medicare enrollment. They will also provide detailed instructions for using the Agency's online services at

Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest 2019 Needs Volunteers!
Calling all curd nerds! We're gearing up for our annual WNC Cheese Trail fundraiser, the Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest 2019. We have three spots open for lead volunteers and that's where you come in. Lead volunteers begin volunteering this month and work with our lead team until the completion of the festival, which will be held on Sunday, April 28th at Highland Brewing. These critical lead positions carry more responsibility than our day-of or special-event volunteers, and we need folks who are ready to dive in and get things done. Lead volunteers put into practice their experience, insight and energy to help make our fundraiser a success.
The three positions that we currently have open are Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator(s), Pairings Event Coordinator(s) and Competition Event Coordinator(s). We are happy to have an individual take the lead position or two people who work well together as co-leads.
