NIFA seeks stakeholder input on food, agriculture priorities
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is soliciting stakeholder input on the emerging needs and opportunities in food and agricultural sciences through the "NIFA Listens: Investing in Science to Transform Lives," initiative.
"We invite our stakeholders, scientists, and organizations from across the U.S. agriculture system and beyond to provide their input," said NIFA Acting Director Tom Shanower. "These sessions provide a chance for any interested party to help ensure NIFA's research, education, and extension investments effectively and efficiently support the long-term prosperity and global preeminence of U.S. agriculture."
These listening sessions are your opportunity to provide feedback on these questions:
  • "In your field, what is the most-needed breakthrough in science/technology that would advance your agricultural enterprise?"
  •  "When considering all of agriculture, what is the greatest challenge that should be addressed through NIFA's research, education, and extension?"
  • "What is your top priority in food and agricultural research, extension, or education that NIFA should address?"
Four regional in-person listening sessions will be held:
  • Oct. 11, Hartford, Connecticut (RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 4)
  • Oct. 18, New Orleans, Louisiana (RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 11)
  • Oct. 25, Minneapolis, Minnesota (RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 18)
  • Nov. 1, Albuquerque, New Mexico (RSVP by Wednesday, Oct. 25)
USDA confirms atypical BSE detection
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Aug. 29 an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a neurologic disease of cattle, in a six-year-old mixed-breed beef cow from Florida.

USDA said this animal never entered slaughter channels and at no time presented a risk to the food supply or to human health in the U.S.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) of USDA's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed that this cow was positive for atypical H-type BSE. The animal was initially tested at the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (a National Animal Health Laboratory Network laboratory) as part of routine surveillance of cattle that are deemed unsuitable for slaughter. APHIS and Florida veterinary officials are gathering more information on the case.

Senate confirms USDA, CFTC posts
James E. Hubbard, Dawn DeBerry Stump and Dan Michael Berkovitz were confirmed for federal posts by the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Upon swearing in, James E. Hubbard will serve as undersecretary of agriculture for natural resources and environment at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Dawn DeBerry Stump and Dan Michael Berkovitz will serve as commissioners of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

In a joint statement, Senate Agriculture Committee chairman Pat Roberts (R., Kan.) and ranking member Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.) said they are pleased that the Senate has advanced these qualified nominees. "Our hard-working farmers, ranchers and folks in rural America have waited too long to be represented in these crucial capacities," they said.

Further development of low-cost FMD vaccine funded
The Pirbright Institute has a received a £2.1 million grant from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct research on a novel foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccine.

According to the announcement, Pirbright Institute scientists will investigate the cattle antibody responses triggered by the vaccine, which will help improve its protective properties. The team will also develop lab-based methods of testing whether the vaccine is effective so they can reduce the number of animal studies.

ADSA Joins in Support of FFAR
The Farm Bill has significant impacts on funding for agricultural research. Both houses of Congress have passed versions of a 2018 Farm Bill, but they are different, so a conference committee will be working to try to reconcile differences and develop a final bill that will pass both houses of Congress and be signed into law. ADSA works through various coalitions to provide information on the value of agricultural research and the need for ongoing support of research. To the end, ADSA recenty joined 124 other organizations in a letter to Congressional leaders of the Farm Bill Conference Committee urging inclusion of enhanced funding of $200 million for the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) in the final conference report.
