Mayor Grebien Welcomes all to Holiday Dinner
To Take Place December 4th

Mayor Donald R. Grebien cordially invites the Pawtucket community to attend the annual Mayor's Holiday Dinner, to be held on Wednesday, December 4th from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at the Holy Family Parish Hall (195 Walcott Street, Pawtucket).

The long standing tradition is free and open to all city residents and is sponsored by the generous donations of food, money, and volunteer help from area businesses and individuals. The dinner has always enjoyed the company of "celebrity guests" that serve as our wait staff for the day.

For much of the morning on Wednesday, Public Works Department employees drove around the streets of Pawtucket in trucks that were practically overflowing with boxes of food that will be assembled into nourishing Thanksgiving meals for the city's neediest families.

As Holiday Basket Committee Chairwoman Laureen Grebien looked on, riding along in one of those DPW vehicles that traversed neighborhoods from Oak Hill to Darlington to Woodlawn, her go-to catchphrase of the day could be seen emblazoned on a banner along the side of one of the city trucks.

"It's neighbors helping neighbors," said Grebien, who is the city's First Lady. "When we say we're from Pawtucket, people here have roots, they have families. It's such a tightknit community."

Kara Larson was driving to work at Rhode Island Spirits, the distillery she owns with her wife, Cathy Plourde. She saw someone along the Blackstone River banks. She knew immediately it was Plourde, foraging around for berries that will go into a batch of gin, vodka or liqueur. That's how you make a local, small-batch artisan product.

Imagine that you have a passion for gin. You want to work with your spouse. You find the perfect spot on the Blackstone River. And you are happy to get your hands dirty.

There you have Rhode Island Spirits, the state's fourth distillery, which opened in March, serving organic and gluten-free spirits, all corn-based. Some of them, like Rhodium Vodka, distilled seven times, and Rhodium Limoncello, are certified by Rhode Island Kosher.
