Dear Friends,

Please save the date and spread the word about my 4th Annual Parkdale High School College and Career Fair which I'm hosting with Board of Education Member Lupi Grady on Wednesday, October 10. In addition to college recruiters and employers from across the region and country, we will have several 20-minute break-out sessions on NCAA eligibility, paying for college, resume and interview skills, and more. All students and families are welcome!

Are you a volunteer recruiter for your alma mater? Do you have job openings or offer apprenticeship programs? Please contact Alesha Wilson at 301-952-3060 or [email protected] to reserve a space at this event--we expect 250+ students and their families to attend!

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration and Purple Line Transit Partners are hosting a Purple Line Open House on Thursday, October 4, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the University of Maryland Adele H. Stamp Student Union Atrium, 3972 Campus Drive. This is an open house format to provide information about upcoming construction activities and answer questions, so come by anytime during the event. Questions? Email [email protected] or call 443-451-3706.

If you have not done so,
please sign up to receive Purple Line construction updates via text message or email. You can select which portions of the line are of interest to you.

In addition to the College & Career Fair and Purple Line Open House, the next few weeks are full of important events. On September 26, we will finally re-open the New Carrollton Branch of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System and I can't wait to see it! Please join me at 11:00 a.m. for the ribbon-cutting or visit the branch anytime following the 26th!

M-NCPPC kicks of their Fiscal Year 2020 budget planning with public forums in October. Please take this opportunity to submit written or oral testimony on parks, trails, programs, or amenities you'd like to see funded.

Please plan to attend the community meeting for the NEW William Wirt Middle School on October 9 at 6:30 p.m. at William Wirt Middle School. PGCPS staff and the project architect will share and solicit feedback on the schematic design for the brand new building which is on track (pending continued state funding) to open next to the current building in August 2021.

Do you know about the County's Sustainable Energy Program, including the TNI Clean Energy Grant and Energy Star Certification & Green Leasing Grant? Homeowners may qualify to receive grant funds up to $5,000 towards correcting home energy improvements and then can become eligible to receive up to $10,000 to own their rooftop solar system! Commercial Buildings can get a piece of the pie too! Multifamily and Office Buildings can receive funds (up to $100,000!) to assist with ENERGY STAR certification.

Funds for both grants can be used to offset the costs of electric energy-efficiency, water-efficiency, and retrofitting measures, and for the commercial grant for professional [engineering] services required to achieve ENERGY STAR C ertification. Learn more and apply today !

September and October are also extremely busy with regard to legislation at the County Council. The Zoning Ordinance Rewrite legislative package continues to move forward. Amendments to all three bills were discussed in Committee of the Whole sessions in September. Final public hearings will take place in October. Learn more and link to CB-13, CB-14, and CB-15 and respective amendments on the Council's  Zoning Ordinance Rewrite Portal

I'm pleased that CB-18, which will put into place strong and enforceable noise regulations in the County, passed favorably out of the Transportation, Housing and Environment committee last week. I anticipate a public hearing on this bill in October.

My staff and I will be at several community day events over the next few weeks. We hope to see you at  Riverdale Community Resource Day or New Carrollton Day on September 29 and College Park Day on October 6!

As you may know, long-time mayor of the City of New Carrollton, Andrew C. Hanko, passed away earlier this year. At Noon on September 29, as part of the New Carrollton Community Day, the City will officially dedicate the Andrew C. Hanko Building and I will join them in honoring Mayor Hanko by dedicating a tree in his honor. Please join us for this memorial ceremony and stay for what promises to be a wonderful community event -- all are invited and welcome!

If you work or volunteer for a non-profit organization and would like to apply for a S pecial Appropriations Grant from my office, my deadline is Friday, September 28 (post-marked or hand-delivered). I sent a more detailed email about this grant process to my non-profit email list a few weeks ago. If you did not receive that message and would like to be added to that list, please let me know.

As always, don't hesitate to reach out to a member of my staff or me if we can assist you in any way.

Together Strengthening our Community,
