Executive Director Update: The Board heard from staff regarding business items and other topical updates, including a summary of the Basic Education Compliance Survey.
Committee and Other Updates: Board members reflected on the Equity Summit they hosted on January 8 and discussed various ways to continue the SBE's equity work moving forward. Patty Wood (Board member) also updated the Board on the School Day Task Force progress.
Governor's Office Update: Jim Crawford briefed the Board regarding Governor Inslee's 2019-2021 Proposed Budget, with a special focus on the Governor's Education Budget.
Annual Charter School Report: The Board discussed the updated report (based on slight modifications from the December special Board meeting as well as newly available growth model data).
Senator Lisa Wellman (Chair, Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee) shared her top K-12 priorities for the 2019 legislative session, particularly: re-building the educational system from the inside out to become more responsive to the needs of families, children and the workforce, to bolster mental health and safety, and to ensure a continuum that leads to living wage careers.
2019 Legislative Priorities of Representative Santos:
Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos (Chair, House Education Committee) also shared her top K-12 priorities for the 2019 legislative session, specifically: buttressing school safety and scrutinizing graduation requirements, including high stakes tests, as well as facilitating systemic mindsets shifting from "four year college is the only or best route."
Student Presentation
: Student Board Member Autymn Wilde presented a proposal to make a student mental health assembly a state requirement. The mental health assembly would be student-driven and locally delivered, intended to break the stigma associated with mental health issues, and provide information on the school and community resources.
Competency-Based Education Discussion: The Board engaged with staff in a discussion around the current state of competency-based education in Washington, with comparisons to other states' competency-based education models.
