I'm Writing Again!
I have not written a blogpost for a while. Two years and five months to be exact. The last piece I wrote was on May 24, 2016 shortly after the adjournment of the 2016 UMC General Conference. I'm sure there are a myriad of reasons why I haven't been writing, but its nothing I've been able to put my finger on. As life and work went on, I just lost the desire, the impetus, and consequently even the time, to write.

That changed a month or so ago when our Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky invited all of us in the Greater Northwest Area to a "year of Crossing Over to LIFE" using Brian McLaren's book, We Make the Road by Walking, as our roadmap. It is an invitation to spiritual renewal and alignment with Christ. This call to journey resonated with me vocationally as a pastor and in my role as Superintendent of the Alaska Conference but even more so personally as husband, parent, son and friend. I'll be sharing more about the personal impacts later.

Crossing over into something new
Riffing off of the late Phyllis Tickle's theory that the Church undergoes "an epoch-changing transformation" every 500 years or so, SeaTac Missional District Superintendent Rev. Rich Lang considers the complexity of the crossing over we are undergoing today.

Raising big questions, Lang writes, "We are always crossing over from what is to what is coming."

CrossOver and El Buen Coyote
"I have yet to hear any mention of "crossover" that does not immediately cause me to think of immigrants," writes the Rev. Karen Hernandez in this preview post for the Greater Northwest Area's CrossOver study.

Hernandez shares a story she encountered in which Jesus is understood as El Buen Coyote, "the one who breaks some laws in order to fulfill the Gospel."

Commentary: Evaluating the GC2019 organizational plan
The veil on how the upcoming special 2019 General Conference will unfold has been lifted at least a little with the release of the plan from the Commission on General Conference.

Lonnie Brooks, a reserve lay delegate from Alaska, praises some of the organizational plan, but raises concerns about other points.

Decisions won't stop with General Conference
The One Church Plan, recommended by the Council of Bishops, would let a local church host a same-sex wedding, but only if the congregation votes in favor of having such weddings. All three Way Forward plans set to be considered by the special General Conference hold the prospect of tough votes by United Methodist churches and conferences.
