Day 73: North to Mexico for our Favorite Mugs.

Destination:  Central Mexico
Central Mexico is the country's historic core. This region, comprised of 7 states, offers some of Mexico's most important historic places: the colonial cities of Puebla, Cholula (with The Great Pyramid, also known as Tlachihualtepetl), Mexico City (built on the ancient capital of the Aztec empire called Tenochtitlan), and the Aztec pyramid of Teotihuacan.

Inland central Mexico's weather is warm or hot during the day and cools down come nightfall. Cities at high altitudes, like Mexico City at 7,382 feet can be quite cold, particularly at night. The warmest months of the year are April and May with average high temperatures at 80°F. Then the rains start and temperatures drop. The rainy season lasts from May through September or October, and the coldest months are December and January when the average low is 43°F.

Fun Facts:
Much smaller than pyramids, but also a very distinctive dwelling is Casa Azul  or The Frida Kahlo Museum. Also known as the Blue House for the structure's cobalt-blue walls, it is a historic house museum and art museum dedicated to the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. It is located in the Colonia del Carmen neighborhood of Coyoacán in Mexico City.

Join us in a quick tour of Casa Azul before we continue our journey to discover the ceramics of Mara.

Art Form:  Mara Mugs
Blaze International and Ceramica Mara work with artisans in central Mexico to develop unique, high quality functional art that can be shared, collected and used every day.

Originally designed by the artist Mara, these sculpted and incised mugs are truly distinctive. As fellow artist Alfredo Zalce has said ..." her flowers, birds and geometric designs all represent her personal vision and display her unique perceptions of the world."

Mara mugs are handmade from high fired stoneware and lead free glazes that will last for years. Minor imperfections are a common characteristic of hand-finished stoneware products and each piece is unique.

The Artist: Mara
Mara was an accomplished painter, sculptor and ceramicist who created Ceramica Mara. She studied engraving with the famous artist, Alfredo Zalce. After studying art in London, she began working with high-temperature ceramics and created wonderfully unique glazes for her pieces. She then went on to study with the Italian ceramist, Bruno Terese, in Italy. Her original stoneware pieces have been exhibited in Europe, the United States and Mexico.

Unfortunately Mara passed away in 2007. She was a very prolific artist and, while her current designs are still in production, she left numerous yet unintroduced designs for the future. Mara's artistic stoneware will grace all our lives for many years to come.

The Company:
Blaze International was established in 1986 and is located in San Diego, California. They oversee production and distribution of Ceramica Mara mugs from Central Mexico. Ceramica Mara has always been a family operation. Mara's daughter Alexandra, an artist and history professor, now manages day-to-day production and is carrying on her mother's fine tradition including creating new ceramic designs for these special mugs.
