Connecting the Dots with Shawn Young

If you have read past episodes of Connecting the Dots, you realize that there is a group of alumni from the late 1950's all of the way up to the early 70's that regularly get together and go golfing and from time to time. I have had the great pleasure of joining them on occasion. This is a great way for me to learn the history of this school, and honestly, I have made a lot of great friends. Last year, several members of this group decided that they were going to fulfil a lifelong dream. They decided to go over to Ireland for a week of golf, adventure, and a lifetime of stories. Of course I wanted to go, but my duties here, and my lack of funds prevented me from going. But Jack Selzer '66 did go, and I asked him to be my eyes and ears on the trip

According to Jack, the McNick class of 1966 was the greatest McNick class of them all. Among other things, they did create McNick's first yearbook. They produced the Greater Cincinnati League football Player of the Year (Paul Schroder), and the city's basketball Player of the Year (Mike O'Connell); they won the district championship in baseball. Since graduation, the class has remained tight, thanks to Bridget Moran Kahermanes, Bob and Linda Ewers, Lennie Feldkamp Blasing, Donna Warner McDonald and the many others who organize their reunions, monthly lunches and dinners, and even charity events.

But this wasn't a class-of-66 adventure. Jack got included with his brother Paul '61, and several members of the Monday morning golf group. The McNick 1961 team included Tom Meyer, Terry Madama, Paul Selzer, and Bill Deimling. When some members of the group had to drop out for one reason or another, they invited Jack, and a couple non-Rockets to fill up the trip. Tom Meyer, an accomplished CPA and organizer as well as a man with deep Irish roots and knowledge, handled the arrangements.

Anyway, these guys talked about McNick-or golf--the entire time, because there wasn't much else to talk about since Tom had wisely prohibited, for the good of the order, any mention of religion, politics, the Cincinnati Reds, or the Bengals. But mostly it was about McNick, because McNick had provided years of memories and stories and character studies to rehash at the end of each day of golf, always with a light-hearted flourish. Tom and Paul remembered their disastrous 1960 Christmas-tree sales experience as well as various Ohio River boating adventures and mishaps. Terry could recall just about every play in every game of football played by the Rockets from 1957 to 1960. Bill, an expert on 1960s music, could probably name (and describe) every member of the class of 1961. And all of the 1961ers could recall who had a crush on whom way back when (no names shall be mentioned here); and what has become of just about all of their (mostly) tremendous classmates.

3rd Annual Alumni Blood Drive

Thank you for all of those who have supported the Dennis family (Bridget (Liette) and Bret class of '98) with your love, prayers, and support for their  now 4 -year-old son, Ryan. In June 2014, Ryan was born without the ability to create any T-cells, a vital cell needed in the immune system to fight off any type of infection. Ryan was diagnosed with SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency), a rare, life-threatening genetic condition, and the only known cure  was  a bone marrow transplant.

After Ryan's diagnosis, the Dennis family had to begin living in complete isolation in order to keep Ryan free from illness before his transplant.  His siblings and parents were not suitable bone marrow matches, but after months of searching, a perfect match was found through the Be the Match registry. On January 21, 2015, Ryan received his Bone Marrow Transplant, and at 9 months post- transplant, he was considered "cured" from SCID. He now is a normal
year old with a functioning immune system.

Throughout Ryan's health journey, he has received many different blood products from kind strangers who donated through Hoxworth. Starting at just three weeks old, he received IVIG (antibodies collected from the plasma of over one thousand donors) to give him extra protection against viruses. He also received numerous blood and platelet transfusions after his transplant. Ryan's transplant recovery would not have been as successful without these donations. Now, Ryan and his family would like to help other children and adults in need of these life saving blood, platelet, and plasma donations.

Please save the date of  October 29,  2018 , from  5-7 pm  at McNicholas High School  for the Hoxworth Blood Donation in honor of  Ryan Dennis and his family.

Mark the date on your calendar, sign up will be in the October Newsletter.

Rocket Nation - Light Up McNick: Tuition Assistance

The Archbishop McNicholas High School alumni community wants good things for others. We share our love of McNicholas High School with past, present, and future Rockets, parents, and grandparents of Rockets, and friends of McNicholas.
For the first time in McNicholas High School's history, the Rockets hosted a Friday night football game on our own campus on August 24, 2018. Many people worked very hard to bring this night to fruition, and they continue working to make the Paradise complex and Penn Station Stadium look fabulous every day. Light Up McNick was a great celebration of the history of how Paradise started and how far we have come.

In conjunction with this event, McNicholas launched our  Rocket Nation, a tuition assistance program that will help children who want a Catholic education get one.

Rocket Nation is:
*An enthusiastic group of supporters of McNicholas High School
*Dedicated to providing tuition assistance to current and future Rockets
*Open to McNicholas alumni, McNicholas parents and faculty, and any friends of McNicholas High School.

Rocket Nation objectives are to:
*Create excitement and support for McNicholas High School
*Raise funds to help future Rockets who need tuition assistance
*Reengage past alumni and reignite their passion for McNicholas.
*Increase enrollment and secure the future of McNicholas.

Membership in Rocket Nation is a $100 annual tax-deductible donation. Please contact Mark Doran, Director of Development,  [email protected] or click here to join Rocket Nation.

2nd Annual St. Nick at McNick Alumni Project

Time flys and Christmas will be here before we know it. Yikes!....right? While most of us aren't ready to go there yet, the Alumni Association, led by the St. Nick crew from the Class of '66, is beginning to make plans for the 2nd annual St. Nick at McNick project to gift the needy at Christmas.

Last year, we raised nearly $3,000. It was a great first year effort and allowed St. Nick to gift 130 people. This year, we hope to surpass that amount in rather significant fashion by getting the St. Nick word out early and gaining support and involvement from a greater number of alumni.

To that end, we are asking for alumni support of our St. Nick at McNick effort. St. Nick's mission is to raise funds to gift and provide a little support to people in need during the holiday season. For some, St. Nick will provide gifts for Christmas. For others, the program will provide more basic necessities such as warm gloves and scarves, clothing, food and household items.

The number of people we will be able to help depends on the amount of money we can raise. We hope that many of you will consider a contribution to the St. Nick at McNick effort. As McNick alumni, we are many in number, and even small contributions will add up..so give a little or give a lot. Together, we can be a mighty force.

The St. Nick crew is just getting started on this second year effort. As St. Nick plans evolve, more details will be posted/released (agencies we will be supporting, dates, times, help needed, etc.), so stay tuned.
There will be many ways to contribute. We will need shoppers and a small army of people to help wrap and organize the gifts at the wrapping party.
We will be collecting contributions until December 6th (St. Nicholas Day).

Financial contributions can be made in two ways...
You can pay Online by clicking here or you can pay by check - which can be sent to...
McNicholas High School
Attn: St. Nick/Shawn Young
6536 Beechmont Ave.
Cincinnati, OH 45230
Make check payable to: McNicholas High School
NOTE: Be sure to make note on the check that the contribution is for St. Nick.
Thank you for considering the St. Nick at McNick effort. St. Nick was a doer of good deeds. Help us carry on his tradition.
