Greening Streets Improves Stormwater Management
Landscaped medians provide more than just aesthetic benefits in King of Prussia
Since 2011, King of Prussia District has installed and maintained 11 roadway island medians on First Avenue, Rt. 202, and I-76. Not only have these planting beds provided vibrant landscaping for all to enjoy, these green improvements have reduced stormwater runoff during rain storms, making the roads safer and the environment and streams near these streets less polluted.
Replacing concrete and compacted dirt with top soil and plantings across the 34,276 sq. ft. of island medians reduces runoff for each rain event from 1,158 gallons per minute to 405 gallons per minute. Less water flowing across the roadway means a reduction in the amount of pollutants that seep into the soil and makes their way into our waterways. KOP-BID looks forward to installing planting beds on 3 more island medians this year.
