Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education ,

The community welcomed four Barrow County eighth grade students as the 2018-2019 REACH (Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen) Georgia Scholars for the Barrow County School System. Joining Superintendent Dr. Chris McMichael in welcoming the new scholars was Mr. Michael Poll, Georgia Gwinnett College Vice President of Enrollment Services, who spoke about how to be successful in college. The REACH Scholars each signed a commitment form with the Georgia Student Finance Commission REACH Georgia Program promising to maintain passing grades, attendance, and good behavior, along with other milestones to prepare them for college. Parents also signed committing themselves to support their child through specific activities.                                     Tar Wars

Our elementary schools went to battle this week in the Tar Wars - a tobacco-free education program provided for fourth and fifth grade students by the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Barrow, a BCSS District Partner in Education. The lesson also fits in with the Georgia Performance Standards for Health Education and provided cross-curricular opportunities we well. Developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, Tar Wars is designed to teach kids about:
* Short-term health effects of tobacco use
* The cost associated with using tobacco products
* Advertising techniques used by the tobacco industry to market to youth

Thank you to NEGMC Barrow for bringing this program to our schools and helping to educate our children. Between 2008-2012, Barrow County had a lung cancer indicator value of 87.9, well above its neighbor Gwinnett County's value of 54.1 and the state benchmark of 68.8 (National Cancer Institute). Programs like Tar Wars help inform students to make better decisions about their own health.

Red Ribbon Week

Each year during Red Ribbon Week, the Barrow County Sheriff's Office presents a red ribbon to each school to honor the memory of Enrique Camerena, an agent with the DEA who was killed in the line of duty. The Officers bring the history and significance of the red ribbon to our students and staff. Thank you Barrow County Sheriff's Office for being so involved and dedicated to the students of Barrow County! See some of the activities in our schools this week.
