About 45 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students joined MAFP at the State Capitol on Jan. 30 for a day of networking with legislators and showcasing family medicine's impact on the state.
The day was a great way to meet legislators, said EC HealthNet resident Dr. Lindsey McCormick of Meridian. "MAFP gave us all contact numbers for our local senator and house rep, and I sent a text to each to let them know I was at the Capitol and would love to meet with them if time allowed. Rep. Charles Young Jr. of Meridian responded within the hour," she said. "He came to our event and specifically asked to meet with me, by name, and we got to take photos and spend time talking about Family Medicine and Meridian and found we had a lot in common around the community. He was very friendly and very easy to talk with and even offered to meet for dinner once back in Meridian!"
The day started with a breakfast in the Capitol rotunda, followed by a tour of both the Capitol building and the Capitol Medical Clinic. After being introduced in the Senate gallery, several people met with legislators privately and attended committee meetings. MAFP President Dr. David Wheat had a private meeting with Gov. Phil Bryant as he signed a special proclamation in MAFP's honor.
At the afternoon reception, 83 legislators attended and received a goodie bag with information about Family Medicine and a pottery mug.The reception featured celebratory cake for MAFP's 70th anniversary. Facebook Photos of the Event
Many thanks to MEA Medical Clinics for attending and doing health screenings. Representatives also attended from the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce and the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program. Many of the students who attended were Rural Scholars interested in family medicine.

CDC Awards 'Most Improved' to MS for Adolescent Vaccination Rates
Mississippi was honored by the Centers for Disease Control last week for its big improvement in adolescent vaccination rates during the years 2014-17. Mississippi received the Most Improved Coverage Among Adolescents award for "recognition of your extraordinary accomplishment in achieving the most improved average in coverage rates for four vaccinations among adolescents age 13-17 years from 2014 to 2017," according to the award certificate.
Mississippi's family physicians play a big role in adolescent vaccinations. Keep up the good work!
Becky Shipp, the Immunization Program Director for the Miss. Department of Health, was proud of the accomplishment. "This award is a symbol of our dedication to protecting Mississippians," she said.
Shipp cited vaccination rates in 2017 that showed significant improvement over 2014, including:

MAFP Visits Forrest General FM Residency to Talk Tobacco
Helping physicians learn how to talk to their patients about quitting smoking is one of the goals of the MAFP Foundation. To that end, the Academy visits each Family Medicine residency in Mississippi annually to discuss tobacco cessation with residents. This week, MAFP staff member Jewell Buckley visited Forrest General Family Medicine Residency for a lunch meeting attended by more than a dozen residents. Special guest speaker was Dr. Tom Payne of the ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Education and Research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
