LAGUNA STUDENTS DIVE INTO THE UNKNOWN AT SECOND TEDx EVENT
|
|
BRAVO, STUDENTS!
Laguna students produced another hugely successful and sold-out TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool event on Tuesday, January 29. Based on the theme
UNCHARTED
, the event featured 20 speakers and performers from all around the world who explored the theme by pushing boundaries and sparking deep discussions about space, literature, disease, culture, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, and music.
“This year, we wanted to go into new territory and we felt the theme UNCHARTED was the best way to do that,” explains
Rhami Zeini ’20
, head of the business development team for the TEDx Project-Based Leadership class.
Some of the speaker highlights included
Alison Teal, named the “Female Indiana Jones” by Time Magazine;
Jen Bricker, an experienced acrobat and aerialist born without legs, and
Charlie Plumb, a former navy pilot captain and ex-POW for six years during the Vietnam War.

EIGHTH GRADERS GIVE STELLAR PRESENTATIONS ON MISSIONS TO MARS
|
|
On Friday, 1/25, six teams of eighth graders contended for ways to reach the Red Planet and pioneer the first human settlement in a joint venture between English, Science, and History. Throughout the project, students tackled
essential questions like, w
hy should humans go to Mars, how will they get there, how to sustain life within a Martian colony, and how might Martian societies evolve and develop over time?
They took on the roles of captain, health officer, communications officer (and more!), created companies, completed research, wrote proposals, published websites, produced company trailers, and made their final pitches before a fictitious group of investors
—
UCSB experts, faculty, administrators, and select students
—
who challenged the teams with unexpected crisis scenarios such as: oxygen failure, new world overload, and discovery of a secret colony.
As Team Aquila X sums it up, "The path to Mars takes work, a community, organization, compassion, precaution, and communication!"
Congratulations to all the teams for doing an out-of-this-world job!

Recognizing and Breaking Free of Perfectionism:
Tips for Helping Children Minimize this Self-Defeating Trait
We often hear how perfectionism can drive people toward success. However, perfectionism has many significant negative consequences, including anxiety and depression, and is self-defeating. Learn more about perfectionism and how this trait develops into a pattern that is not sustainable or balanced. We will review the signs of perfectionism, how it leads to anxiety and depression, and what parents can do to encourage cognitive and behavioral routines that minimize this trait.

LAGUNA BLANCA GIRLS SOCCER SECURES PLAYOFF SPOT
|
|
BY BARRY PUNZAL,
NOOZHAWK SPORTS EDITOR
The combination of
Julia Guglielmo '20 and
Bea Lujan '21 was magic for the Laguna Blanca girls soccer team, as they accounted for three goals in a 4-2 Frontier League victory over Villanova on Monday, 1/28 that secured a CIF playoff spot for the Owls.
Guglielmo fed Lujan for both goals in a 2-0 first half.
In the second half, Lujan hit a through pass to Guglielmo for a breakaway finish and a 3-0 lead.
Villanova countered with a goal and then gave up a goal on a communication breakdown on back pass to the goalkeeper. The Wildcats added their second goal on a long-range shot.
Go Owls!

NATALIE MCCAFFERY '20 COMES UP BIG FOR LAGUNA BLANCA IN 0-0 DRAW WITH SANTA CLARA
|
|
BY BARRY PUNZAL,
NOOZHAWK SPORTS EDITOR
Laguna Blanca and Santa Clara played to a scoreless draw to remain tied for second place in the Frontier League girls soccer standings on Wednesday, 1/30.
Laguna coach Kevin Shertzer said goalkeeper
Natalie McCaffery '20 was the player of the match.
"She made three absolutely incredible saves to keep the clean sheet," he said. "Their best chance came in the second half when they ripped a shot that, when it came off of her foot, I thought it was in. Natalie got a hand to it and pushed it onto the post. The ball came straight down and she was able to gather the rebound."
"Our entire team gave such an effort tonight that I can’t find enough positive things to say about them," he added. "We were limited in chances going forward, but fought for everything and were able to keep Santa Clara in front of us."
