What a fabulous turnout for our first Fit and Lit night! It filled the school with great energy to have so many families venture out on such a chilly night to enjoy a little bite to eat and some reading and movement fun. After personalizing bookmarks and bestowing their handprints on "the Pledge wall," kids and parents spread out all over the school getting cozy with some reading. Several classroom teachers circulated and surprised the kiddos with free homework passes, while others treated people to a read-a-loud. Mr. Kirk then helped to jumpstart everyone's blood moving with some yoga poses before releasing everyone to get busy interacting with Stony Brook's movement "motor break" stations. Giggles and encouraging words floated all around as all got a little sweaty. We bet everyone slept well that night! What a great way to take care of our brains and bodies, by pledging to " Spend a little time reading and a little time moving each day!
Please do not drop your child off when there is not an adult outside. For the safely of the child, we ask that you walk your child into the school. Thanks!
News from the Library Media Center

Kindergarten Technology classes have been working hard to learn how to navigate their way through the Stony Brook Technology page. They are able to access the web page by clicking on “the Beach Ball” as we call it, (but they will tell me that the official name of the browser is Google Chrome). From here the students are directed to the SBES Technology page and are familiar with programs such as Starfall, Kid Pix, and ABCYa. Students are working on letter and number recognition, including games that involve letter names, letter sounds, weighing, measurement, counting, and sorting. Students are also spending time on Lexia each class.

In Mrs. Whitney’s Kindergarten Library classes, students have been learning about books that have received the Caldecott Award. We have read several award winning books in the last few weeks and discussed why this book might have been awarded this honor.

1st Grade Technology has been further developing their math strategies and ELA skills using programs such as Starfall and ABCYa. Students are working on fun and interactive games to solve addition and subtraction equations from numbers 1-20. They are also using a variety of games to identify sight words, practice blending, and develop fluency.
Students will soon be introduced to our coding robots in the lab. They will learn how to program these robots to follow their directions through the use of code and commands.

2nd Grade students spent the month of January learning how to code on Code.org. The
students were challenged each week to solve and debug computer code to make the program run properly. These students have also recently started our new typing program called Typing Quest. Students were given a pre-test to evaluate their level of typing skills, which at this point is really very minimal. They are excited and eager to learn how to type and to see their skills develop over the course of the school year. It is so exciting to see how quickly they are taking off with this program.
  • Reminder to Parents: The Child Passenger Safety law in Massachusetts states that all children riding in passenger motor vehicles must be in a federally-approved child passenger car seat that is properly fastened and secured until they are 8 years of age or over 57 inches tall. Children older than 8 years of age or taller than 57 inches must wear seat belts.

PTO will be hosting their annual Pasta Dinner , Friday, March 15th from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. PTO is asking if any families / businesses are willing to donate items for a silent auction, they should contact Allyson Joy, joya@nausetschools.org with any donations. This is a great way to
showcase your business
and is very much
appreciated!
We are having a great time stretching our minds at SBES! Students in our after school enrichment program, Microscopic Structures, have learned how to use a compound microscope to view tiny specimens. They know the parts of the microscope, and they can place and focus on slides. They are practicing using the process skill of observation ; in this case using their visual sense to notice details. Students then document their discoveries in greater detail, by changing the objectives and drawing each specimen at increasing levels of magnification. I am so proud to watch our young scientists at work with this marvelous technology.

First graders in Jr. Great Books are working on written descriptions and illustrations of Rumpelstiltskin’s hut. Second graders are giggling over the hilarious and very original story of the Blue Moose, and Kindergarten students have illustrated their favorite scenes in Feraj and the Magic Lute. There is no end to the fascination we can find in a great story!

Games are the current mode of exploration and learning in Math Enrichment. Kindergarteners are working with games to introduce doubles facts, as well as concepts of odd and even. First graders have been introduced to pre-algebra through a delightful game called Balance Beans, and second graders are having loads of fun learning multiplication with the Monster Sock Factory.
We are making the most of our winter, and we hope you are too!
