A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY

HAPPINESS BEGINS WITH HOW WE LIVE OUR LIVES

During my Rosh Hashanah sermon I discussed the 10 things our Jewish tradition provides for us to do in our daily lives to make us happier. The suggestions come from a prayer entitled "Eilu Devarim" which we read every day during morning services. (The prayer is on page 90/91 of the Mahzor).

I have gleaned this list from the prayer itself and The Happiness Prayer  By Rabbi Evan Moffic:

1)HONOR THOSE WHO GAVE YOU LIFE

2)BE KIND

3)KEEP LEARNING

4)INVITE OTHERS INTO YOUR LIFE

5)BE THERE WHEN OTHERS NEED YOU

6)CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES

7)SUPPORT YOURSELF AND OTHERS DURING TIMES OF LOSS

8)PRAY WITH INTENTION

9)FORGIVE

10) LOOK INSIDE THE TORAH AND YOURSELF               AND COMMIT

As I requested on Rosh Hashanah tell me one of two things:

1) Search your memory and tell me why do you come to services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, or

2) Tell me what would make you happy.

Look for the full text of my sermons after Yom Kippur.   Any questions or thoughts? Just email me at [email protected]

If we are looking for happiness let's start with one of the songs we sang on the first day of Rosh Hashanah:

DON'T WORRY/ BE HAPPY

Here's a song for the New Year
I hope the time doesn't bring you fear
Don't worry, be happy

In every life we do some bad
Just say you're sorry, don't be sad
Don't worry, be happy
Don't worry, be happy now
don't worry

(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don't worry, be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don't worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don't worry, be happy

To repent won't cost you money,
Just dip your apples in some honey
Don't worry, be happy

You did a sin now say "ahl chait"
But for Yom Kippur you'll have to wait
Don't worry be happy
Don't worry, be happy now

(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don't worry, be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don't worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don't worry, be happy

KOL HAKAVOD CAMPAIGN

Please consider being a part of this campaign to supplement the clergy needs of our congregation.   This is a separate, voluntary commitment  and is additional to our low annual dues obligation. HERE IS THE LINK TO BRING UP THE DONATION FORM KOL HAKAVOD

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

Shofar Rosh Hashanah at the JCC of LBI.  There is no more beautiful picture than the doors of our beautiful building opened wide to welcome all. The sanctuary/social hall was filled to capacity with members and guests, families large and small, babies to seniors. Rabbi Jay delivered an interactive sermon on the first day of the holiday with a call to "Don't Worry Be Happy". On the second day, he spoke of Israel as well as conducted a thoughtful 9/11 memorial service.   The richness and energy of our hazzan Shalom Zachmy filled the building. As our President said, "I cannot wait to hear the Hazzan chant Kol Nidre."

Our new President, Michael Babst, spoke of his journey as a Jew and encouraged the congregation to support the JCC through this year's High Holiday Appeal (a letter with the speech and contribution card will be in the mail shortly). Terri Robinovitz lead a wonderful program for a sizeable group of children and her efforts are so appreciated. It was so special to see all of them on the bimah, which was dressed for the holiday with flowers donated by the Rosensweig Family.

Thank you to many for making the service go so smoothly.  Kudos to Carole Nunberg for taking care of all reservations, tickets and seating, to Irene Babst who helped with greeting worshippers at the door, to Harold Farin and Stuart Pepose for serving as ushers, to Harris Weisel and Ira Morganthal our capable gabbiam.  Thank you also to our staff for their work and support.

Yasher Koach to all those who had aliyahs and honors, to Mark Rosenthal and Aaron Lombardi for reading Torah, to Ira Morganthal and Stu Lehrer for chanting the Haftorahs.

The sounds of the shofar called to us: Shevarim, Teruah, Tekiah.  Yasher Koach to our Baal Tekia (Shofar Caller) Don Pripstein and Shofar blowers Rabbi Jay and Stu Lehrer.

SHABBAT SHUVAH

Shabbat Shuvah ("Sabbath [of] Return" שבת שובה) refers to the Shabbat that occurs during the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Only one Shabbat can occur between these dates. This Shabbat is named after the first word of the Haftarah (Hosea 14:2-10) and literally means "Return!"
